Lisa Gardner's books are always a joy to read and this is no exception. The plot centres around a woman - Nicole - with a serious head injury and only partial memories of recent events, plus a vague awareness of some past trauma. Her husband is with her in hospital as she awakens after a car crash, and she frantically worries about a missing child known as 'Vero'. Her husband tells the police they have no children, so who is Vero? Is she a character from Nicole's fevered imagination or a real person from her traumatic past?

The book is written using multiple first-person perspective so we do not always immediately know who we are following. This does not lead to confusion, because the writing is so good. The book takes off into unexpected areas and the characters are strong and well drawn. If you enjoy psychological thrillers with a strong element of danger, this is one for you.

Not an easy book to get into, but worth persevering as it does become quite interesting. It was a bit depressing, and slightly confusing at first, but once the detective started to get some idea of what was happening, it became more readable, although twisty and unusual.

Car crash – not able remember what happened and her daughter is missing. A popular premise and one that’s been covered numerous times but in no way was this a predictable read and certainly didn’t follow those which have gone before it. We see the events unfold following the crash as they are investigated by police, who suspect the husband of being involved in foul play. Through many twists and turns which weave together towards the end, this is an enjoyable read, with good strong characters, well written. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller. I was given a free copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first Lisa Gardner and I was super impressed. I read a lot of thrillers but this one was actually different and kept me guessing right to the end. The beginning of the novel hooks you in immediately with the words, ‘I died once’. Straight away I had questions! What on earth is going on?

At the very start of the book, our main character, Nicky is involved in what should have been a fatal car accident. Not only does she survive but she tells police that her little girl, Vero, has gone missing. A search ensues before Nicky’s husband informs police that they have no children. How much of Nicky’s story is her own and how much is a result of traumatic brain injury? This is the question underpinning the whole story and every time I thought I’d worked it out, I was yet again, proved wrong.

An incredibly cleverly plotted and intriguingly told story. This definitely won’t be my last Lisa Gardner.
