4.5/5 - What sets this book apart is its exploration of complex issues such as domestic abuse, bullying, and the pressure to be a perfect parent in a picture-perfect community. Moriarty tackles these subjects with sensitivity and nuance, creating a powerful and thought-provoking novel that will stay with readers long after they've finished reading.
A slower start and a fantastic ending.

This book will break your heart and will build it back into something wiser, a little bit sadder and much more hopeful.
There is a lot of moms and dads around the Pirriwee Public School. Madeline, a bit superficial and funny, willing to fight for (almost) everything and a force to be reckoned with. Celeste, who is so beautiful that one can forget to breath when seeing her, the one having the perfect life with her perfect husband and sons. A young single mother Jane, feeling shy around all of the motherzillas.
And everyone of them knows what a wrongdoing is. And everyone of them is lying about something. Some lies covers just small things, some cover bigger. And some cover the evil.
Now I finally understand why everybody is talking about Liane Moriarty. Now I am one of them.
This book is so warm. Even if there are layers in the plot - some expected, some unexpected - the book leaves you hopeful that you can go on and on and on. Even if your teenage daughter despises you and and adores everything the new wife of your ex-husband is doing. Even if you are a victim of domestic violence. Even if you have had a very ugly sexual experience in a hotel room as a young girl.
But this is not fluffy, superficial book. I consider it being the best book about the domestic violence I have read yet. It shows that not everything is black-and-white and the vicious cycle the victims are part of.
This is also the book you find yourself nodding and saying, yes, it's like this. This feeling I know. Does anyone else have it like this? And I am not speaking about the wrongdoings, but about women. The authoress knows her fellow women and is a very good observer about their weaknesses, but also strengths. And also a very funny storyteller! The adult community about the school is just crazy, superficial and silly. And very human.
I felt in love with Madeline and Celeste and have a soft spot for Jane. Also for Ed, Madeline's husband, who is the real man even if he is looking like a balding, middle-aged guy.
Leaving the pages of the book, I feel like recovering from a severe illness, the one that that keeps you exhausted, but you already have the desire to leave the bed and go for the things that are waiting behind the window. Weakened, but with hope. I donΒ΄t always have a physical reaction from the read - so this is the best review of how deep the novel went and how enriched I have became because of it.
This is my first read by this author and it certainly won't be my last as I really enjoyed this story.
This is based on three women- Madeline, Celeste and Jane. They all have children starting kindergarten at the same time. We read of their relationship and what can happen behind closed doors. The author threw in a murder at a school trivia night and I found myself trying to fit the pieces together and work it all out in my head.
I've got to admit I found it slow to start and I kept having to think about who the characters were. As I got into the story I enjoyed it more and was glad I kept reading. Some great omg moments had me glued.
Really gotta read more from this author soon.
