When Chinese exchange student Min Li goes missing, Detective Inspector Will Jackman is assigned to the case. While trying to find Min, Will uncovers some deeply buried secrets. Can he find Min before it’s too late?
This was a pretty good book. I had never tried this author before and since I enjoy true crime, I decided to try her. I was glad I wasn’t disappointed. I really liked Will and enjoyed following him as he searched for Min. I also liked the change in POV. Often this can get annoying and sometimes even ruin the story for me, but I thought the author did it very well. I highly recommend.

Quite well-written British police procedural dealing with a kidnapping case/s with a twist.

What at first seems as another young woman murder case turns into a kidnapping case - but the ones what is seemingly missing an internal logic. Why there was a ransom request? And, when paid, why the victim was not left to go free, but another kidnapping occurred instead of? Detective Will Jackman, plagued by guilt because of the car accident what left his wife in a coma, must find the inner strength to solve the mystery and to let his upper management believe in him (again).

The strength of the novel lies in the psychologization - the inner conflicts of the characters are believable and their struggles are of the kind which ones the reader can identify with. Even if the characters are a bit one-dimensional, they are not blunt.
The idea of the story is fresh and the Chinese element is interesting.
As for the procedural part - well, I realized quite soon who the baddie might be. But otherwise this is a quite well-written book. It would be my choice for an evening when I need the book to drift me away, but still smart and and thoughtful enough not to bore me.
