Taking as his starting point the three plays Shakespeare wrote in 1606 - King Lear, Macbeth and Antony & Cleopatra - Shapiro tries to show how the events unfolding in England at the time might have played into Shakespeare's works and his mindset at the time. Shapiro does it in a very clever way, making what obviously are only theories seem extremely plausible. Shapiro's work is extremely readable, turning what could be a dry exploration of theatre and history into a very interesting picture of the world at the time.
