This debut novel by Max Porter really is quite an extraordinary piece of writing. Set at the heart of an unnamed family (Dad and his two sons, AKA the boys) that has been ripped to pieces by the sudden death of Mum, an unexpected visitor, a Crow, joins their grief, helping to guide them through the worst of times.
Beautifully written, with three clear voices (Dad, the Boys, Crow) guiding the narrative along, this is a heartbreaking glimpse into the world of grieving that resonated deeply with me. Having that voice to help you through the darkest of days can really help you get through the process of conquering something that at first glance is insurmountable.
The tried-but-true cliche that time is the greatest healer, is especially true when it comes to dealing with the acute pain that grief can cause, and as the book progresses, the need for Crow diminishes, eventually undoubtedly flying off to care for another family.
This book really taps into the incredibly personal world of grieving, and really touched me. The last few pages were perfect, echoing in my head for days afterwards. A truly incredible first novel.
