Decent footing for the first in a series, the mystery skips and bounds along to make this a quick read.
Solid start to a police procedural series. Nothing special in a saturated genre. The story was ok but it wasn’t fast paced enough for
Dead Wrong introduces us to detectives Calladine & Bayliss in the start of a new series of police procedurals. A lot has been said and done in that genre so it is difficult to stay original but they make nice quick reads.
The balance is a little bit too much towards the personal life of Calladine, which couldn't really interest me. The case was not that complicated but kept my interest. I've got some other books in the series as well, and will read them at some time.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I would like to thank NetGalley, Joffe Books, and Helen H. Durrant for an advanced copy of Dead Wrong for an honest review.
The first book in a new series this fast paced police procedural had me not wanting to put the book down. D.I. Calladine and D.S. Bayliss work well together as they attempt to solve the gruesome murders and find the killer. I liked how the author had us going between the killers point of view and the police team. I enjoyed reading Dead Wrong and look forward to more books from this author.
Hmm. It took me a while to get around to reading this book and I wasn't sure I was going to finish it. It just felt to me that, apart from the initial gruesome murders and the shooting, nothing else really happened! It seemed to take quite some time for the police team to be doing much so I'm not surprised the main character was getting frustrated with the lack of leads. The 2 main characters were reasonably good and being the first book in the series, it's obvious that this is just an introduction to them and I would hope full character development would come in subsequent titles. I didn't feel anything for the victims as they were dislike-able anyway (I assume intentionally so), It became fairly obvious who the killer was once you realised they knew how to avoid cameras and seemed to be one step ahead of the investigation. So the shock wasn't as apparent to me as it seemed to be to all the other characters!
I read a lot of thrillers and murders and have read much more gripping stuff. I didn't find this lived up to its blurb at all. I normally read books that draw me in and grip me within 1-3 sittings. This book took me over 2 weeks. I missed a few reading opportunities but that's because I didn't feel like giving the time to the book. Reading it for me became a bit of a challenging chore actually.. That said, the only interest it sparked at me was near the end when the main character's personal story started to come out more. Will I read the next one? Not whilst there are so many much better thrillers out which I can't wait to start. It's not a bad book. It's just about an ok one.
