An intriguing and thought-provoking novel. It's an interesting and weird science fiction novel (despite the historical-ish setting). De Abaitua is a clever, imaginative author, who has created a pretty original novel. He balances the parochial with the horrific (the scenes on the warfront are pretty visceral). The novel is a little more strange than I typically enjoy, but it's very good and a must if you're looking for something fresh and original.
