I would describe this book as one man's exploration of what it means to be poor and identify the root causes. However this isn't an academic or social science book. Matthew Small speaks about his travels and experiences in Bath, England and India in an almost diary like quality. Without referring to previous chapters, readers are able to see the evolution of Small's views on poverty and those living in its grip.

A well written, engaging and at times poetic examination of the different types of poverty.
