This started so promisingly. The narrator works in the sex industry and has an amusingly pragmatic approach to her work. Then she’s asked to expand into being a psychic. She’s surprisingly good at this and when worried Susan comes to consult her she becomes involved in trying to help. Susan’s stepson is a whole bunch of trouble. Miles – well, that would be his name for there are many references to other spooky tales here – is a strange boy to say the least. But is he dangerous? He’s certainly an intriguing character – and really quite sinister. So far so good and compelling. But then it all gets a bit out of hand and the end falls flat. I actually found the beginning scarier than The Turn of the Screw and The Haunting of Hill House put together. But Flynn doesn’t quite sustain the suspense; almost as though she’d got herself into the story but didn’t know how to get out of it. A shame – so nearly a very good tale but let down by the end.
