I'm trying to catch up on books I read while I was sick and forgot or simply didn't get around to posting. My apologies for both the vagueness of these as well as the tardiness.
I have revisited this book several times, usually to mention key points to other people. While the main explanation Grua uses throughout is the racist aspect of American society and government, he never implies that it is the sole rationale for the many atrocities. What I would suggest, and what I think fits with the thesis here, is that whatever other aspects you might use, socioeconomic, employment, etc, the racist foundation amplifies those factors.
I do think that emphasizing the racist aspect works for this book because Grua is looking largely at the aftermath, well into the 20th century, so racism may well play a more prominent role after the massacre.
