I really enjoyed this exploration of Hemingway as man and as writer. Rather than a traditional cradle-to-grave biography, the author has divided the book into themes and concentrated on each one in turn, examining how Hemingway approached the theme – love, death, religion etc – in his books and life. It’s a comprehensive and well-researched work, using many primary sources, and although I’m not a Hemingway fan, neither of the man or his books, this would be an invaluable reference book to have alongside when reading them. Insightful and thoughtful, this is a welcome addition to Hemingway scholarship.
