This is such a stunning book. I cried, I swooned, I laughed and I journeyed to distant lands and pictured gorgeous settings in my mind Fabulous from start to finish!
Holly is surprised when she receives a letter informing her of a legacy left to her by an aunt she didn't know existed. Needing to find out more about her inheritance Holly leaves London and travels to the beautiful Greek island of Zakynthos. However, once there Holly is filled with both trepidation and excitement as she begins to learn more about her aunt and the complicated family reasons why Holly had never met her.
This is a lovely story which not only gives us sand, sea and romance, it also takes us a journey of discovery alongside Holly as she travels around this stunning island learning more about her family and consequently herself in the process. The author captures the sights, sounds and blissful aromas of a Greek island and describes Zakynthos so beautifully that it very quickly becomes as much a character in the story as the people themselves.
The author has got the balance exactly right with enough going on to keep the family mystery flowing well and there are also some great characters. I especially loved the common sense of Yorkshire Annie, who runs the neighbourhood taverna, Kostas, in the local supermarket, who teaches Holly smatterings of Greek and Nikos at the beach bar who introduces Holly to the joy of moped riding. And of course, there’s the lovely Aidan who, along with the rest of the cast, I think you should discover for yourselves.
Throughout the whole of My Map of You the beautiful Greek island comes to perfect life, with its endless days of sunshine, turquoise sea and sheltered beaches. I'm so pleased that I picked My Map of You as one of my summer reads as it really is one of those lovely stories which makes an ideal beach, or an afternoon in the garden, sort of read. It's heavier in content than I first thought but it definitely has all the right ingredients for a lovely summer read.
My map of you is a light summer read, which manages to be more than a cliched romance. Holly’s family life has been tragic and complicated, and it only becomes more complicated when she inherits a house on a Greek island from the aunt she didn’t even know existed.
Holly’s journey to and around Zakynthos forces her to confront the truth about her past and her current relationship. Of course there are romantic moments, a ‘journey’ of self discovery etc but even though the ending is predictable Bloom manages to avoid tying things together too neatly, though I did find the final section dragged a bit.
What a wonderful book. I really loved it. It was fluently written and hard to put down. Nice mixture of emotions. I certainly recommend it.
A wonderful book and one that I've read twice already. The way Holly's story is told, dipping in and out of her mother's story, weaving in snippets of letters written to Holly's aunt, it really is beautiful and so very heart warming. You can literally see these characters come to life infront of your eyes, as if you are right there with them. Definitely a favourite of mine.
Thank you to Penguin Michael Joseph for accepting my request via Netgalley. This is Isabelle's debut book. I requested it for two reasons one was the cover and the second is that I am half Greek and love reading any books set in Greece.
Holly didn't know she had an aunt living on Zakynthos. When she's left her aunts house in the will Holly decides to go there for 2 weeks. Her plan is to sort the house out and sell it on. But when she starts to go through her aunts things she's looking for the secret that tore her mum and her twin sister apart.
This story is quite heartbreaking but I loved every part of it.
I didnt like Rupert to begin with. I didn't like that Holly couldn't be herself around him but in the end I felt a bit sorry for him.
Isabelle does an amazing job of describing the island. If I closed my eyes I felt like I was right there on the island too. I understood how Holly felt arriving on the island. I felt exactly the same way when I went to Sidari in Corfu. I felt like I was coming home.
I felt like this story was about more than just romance. While it was a part I felt like it was more the b story in this book and the book was more about Holly finding herself and believing that she is worth more.
I absolutely loved the epilogue to this story. This is the perfect escapism book for the summer and I can't wait to read more of Isabelle's books.
