Really good read! This book will have you lost from reality! Hard to put down! Lots of twist, some you don't see coming. Highly recommended!
This is the first novel I have read by Caroline Mitchell. I was not sure what to expect but the chilling GIF on Twitter lured me to Netgalley where I downloaded a copy and suffice to say I was hooked from the outset.
Full review to be posted soonish.
I would like to thank the publisher and netgalley for providing me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I found this book a little bit predictable unfortunately and boring in parts, so it wasn't really for me.. Sorry
Really enjoyable read. Good characters and a Good story. Well worth a read. Think others will. Enjoy
I didn't read this due to this being a third book in a series. I feel like maybe this needs to be made more apparent in blurbs ect
The Silent Twin by Caroline Mitchell is the 3rd in the Detective Jennifer Knight Series. A tense and enjoyable crime thriller.
Nine-year-old Abigail disappears while playing hide and seek on her remote farm outside a village in England, and her twin sister Olivia becomes the titular Silent Twin. The girls are physically alike, but emotionally different. Olivia is quiet and reserved by nature, and Abigail more outgoing and colorful.
This book is dark and the author’s choice of descriptions sets the gloomy mood beginning in the second paragraph: “A sliver of an icy breeze whistles through the rain-rotted wood of the empty cattle sheds, which house freshly hatched spiders and field mice within. It creaks and shivers against the growing gale.” It is a pleasure to read a book where the author's vocabulary sets the tone so well.
Local police are on the case within hours, and DS Jennifer Knight becomes the family liaison when her first responder colleague refuses to go back to the farm because it creeps her out. Jennifer encounters resistance from every family member: the cheerful mother who dresses in vintage clothes and doesn’t grieve the loss of her daughter, the distraught father who is closed off, and Olivia whose silence and pale coloring make her more a specter than a little girl. There’s also an efficient nanny.
Alternating chapters in the book are journal entries written by a very disturbed person who wants to punish the family. This gives the reader information that the characters are not privy to.
Overall, this is a well written book with well-rounded characters. It is the third in a trilogy but works as a stand alone book.
I loved learning more about Jennifer and her team. And the paranormal aspect of the story really had me hooked.
Twins Abigail and Olivia are out playing hide and seek when Abigail goes missing. This has to be every parents worst nightmare.
Detective Jennifer knight is brought in as the Family Liaison Officer. It isn't long before Jennifer is gaining knowledge on this family and the trust of Olivia, the twin who since her sister has gone missing has become mute. Not uttering a word to anyone. That is until she starts to talk to Jennifer.
Jennifer for me really grew on me more in this book, I'm loving her character and her paranormal tendencies.
The story is certainly one that has you turning the pages, wanting more. It really does grab you by the throat.
I guess it could be read alone, but for me to have a better understanding of the back story of Jennifer, I would suggest reading from the beginning.
Another unputdownable read from this very talented author with some very cleverly done twists.
A well deserved 5 stars. A real page turner of a book. Gripping, with so many twists and turns to keep you guessing all the way through!
