Sharon Bolton once again writes with such ferocity that the pages jump out at you.
Thrilling and chilling yet cleverly written enough to keep you guessing and desperate for more.
Grab a ventilator as you’ll need the oxygen once you find that you’ve held your breath as you turn each page.
Another winner and well worthy of a Five Star review.
Highly recommend.

I have read the first 3 books of the Lacey Flint series by this author and absolutely loved them. With this being a standalone I was curious to see how it fared in comparison. The three main characters are Hamish Wolfe, a man imprisoned for crimes he claims he didn't commit. Maggie Rose, a lawyer and writer who is known for overturning convicted killers and then Detective Sergeant Pete Weston the copper that got Hamish Wolfe convicted.

The writing was just as good as her previous books and it took a mere chapter or two to get into the swing and the pace of this story. However, although I was enjoying it, I can honestly say it didn't grab my attention quite as much as her other books I have read. That aside, there are plenty of layers to this tale and as each element is revealed there are a number of questions raised the more that comes out. I found myself wondering who within the storyline was the person causing all the harm and chaos.

I finished this book over the course of a few days and I can honestly say it is a solid thriller from a great author.

This is a dark and chilling thriller that I utterly loved and couldn’t put down. It’s sucked me right in and I just wanted to carry on reading it. Brilliant,

Once again, Sharon Bolton has written a thriller that has so many twists, I had no idea who was the guilty party, lots of guesses, but the ending was still a surprise. This book is a stand alone so you do not have to have read any of her other books to thoroughly enjoy this one.

Maggie Rose, is a lawyer and author of true crime. She takes on clients that have been convicted and launches an appeal getting them off. She then writes a book about the case. The beginning of the book opens with her walking along the beach when she hears a woman screaming for help. Daisy is trapped in a culvert and the water is rising. Maggie immediately jumps in to save her, risking her own life, only to find out that Daisy not a child, but a dog. Daisy belongs to Hamish Wolfe who is in prison for the abduction and murder of three women. They all have one thing in common, they are a larger dress size. Hamish and his mother do their best to convince Maggie to take his case. The other main character in the book is Pete Weston, the detective who investigated the case originally. Surprisingly, Pete and Maggie begin to work together to further investigate. Maggie to prove that he was wrongly convicted (not innocent) and Pete to find irrefutable proof.

I found the first one third of the book a bit slow, which was why it took me longer to finish, but part way through, it gripped me and I raced to the end. The author has created some interesting characters. I did not really like either of them, but they certainly drove the story. I was not sure who was lying in this book, they did a wonderful job of it. The quirky and eccentric characters in the Wolfe Pack added some other interest to the story. I was sure one of them was the guilty party. The story is gripping with a twists and a major turn. There's plenty going on, with a couple of side trips along the way. The story is narrated by Maggie and Hamish with letters and emails included. This was a great story and I would have given it five stars if the build up had not been quite so slow. What I am saying is, don't give up on this story if you find it slow at the beginning, it gets so much better. A great story for any thriller and suspense lovers.

Ooh ooh ooh what a fantastic book this is! I cannot rave highly enough about it. The plot is superb and something that always intrigued me. What would possess anyone to befriend and write to a prisoner – particularly one that has committed serious crimes like Hamish in this book who is a convicted serial killer?

The thing is that Hamish maintains his innocence and asks ex-lawyer and crime writer Maggie Rose to take on his case. At first she has no interest as she doesn’t believe he could possibly be innocent, but when the detective responsible for his conviction appears and urges Maggie Rose not to get involved it has the opposite effect, and she begins to speak with Hamish. It’s not long before Hamish is getting into her head. But what else is happening that un-nerves Maggie making her wonder about Hamish’s guilt, and also fearful for her safety.

With twists and turns, the plot is dark and uncertain which left me on the edge of my seat. Even better, we don’t just hear the authors narrative, we also see letters and reports from different bodies and authorities which make it at times feel a bit more like a non-fiction book about a serial killer.

I loved this book and have been telling readers who like thrillers to get this on their to read list. I want to tell you so much more but am fearful of giving something away that might ruin it for future readers.

This is the first book I have read by Sharon Bolton but it certainly won’t be my last. I have heard great things about her Lacey Flint series and after lapping this book up they have been downloaded on to my Kindle and close to the top of my list of books to get stuck into.

I don’t feel like I am really doing this book justice in this review because to do so would reveal bits of the plot and risk spoiling what is a fascinating and edge of your seat thriller. But trust me when I say, you need to read this book. It is fast paced, entrancing and dark, with twists and scenes that will make you wonder just what is going on and who you can trust.
