There is a LOT going on in this book, and Louise Jensen keeps you guessing throughout it.
You have the last message that Grace receives from her BFF Charlie before the latter's death. What's up with that? What did Charlie do?
Then there is Anna, who appears to be Charlie's long-lost sister. Is she, though? She seems kind of sketchy, but is she nervous? Grieving? Should we believe her?
Grace's boyfriend Dan is another problem. What is his story? He slowly seems to seem guilty, but about what? Why do you suspect him of ... something?
There is other stuff, but it's best discovered as you read.
Louise Jensen kept me turning the pages like a mad woman. I was mostly curious about Dan. I felt like there was something going on with him, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Anna intrigued me less, mostly because I felt like I knew her deal before it was confirmed. But Dan. I wanted to know about Dan.
I wouldn't say that parts of this book are predictable, but they felt familiar, as if I'd read them before. I enjoyed the twists, though, and I liked wondering what was up with Dan. Have I mentioned that? How I became obsessed with what was up with Dan?
If you want a twisty, mess-with-your-mind mystery, this is a good one.
I really enjoyed this story the plot kept me hooked as did the characters i really enjoyed this story well done
No longer interested in reading this. Clearing out old galleys.
I tried to read this when I initially requested this book (which was last year) and got about 20% before I quit. I tried again and got a bit further but I didn’t like this book. None of the characters and I felt like the author was trying too hard or something
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC of The Sister.
Grace and Charlie have been best friends since grade school. Charlie is full of life and fiercely loyal to Grace, so it's no surprise that when Charlie passes away, that Grace folds into herself. In order to ease the pain of losing someone so close to her, she searches for Charlie's long lost father, but gets way more than she bargained for: a half sister Anna. Desperate to have some sort of connection to her lost friend, Grace fully embraces Anna into her life, but life begins to unravel quickly, as well as the truth.
Strong start, very intriguing, I felt a lot of twists and turns coming, and they did, but just a bit deflated. The word, for some reason, that I would use to describe this plot would be mushy. It started out clear and crisp and exciting, but the close we got to the end and some sort of resolution, the more you began to feel like it was just being half heartedly smashed together. I felt pretty unsatisfied towards the end and had some questions that were not yet answered.
And I'm sorry, but I have to say it. I don't care how much you loved someone that passed away, I can't imagine just inviting someone that I've known 36 hours into my home, borrowed key and all. And then being so PAINFULLY naive when stuff starts going missing, etc. And then to be so clueless. Give me a break.
I know that in life when things go wrong, they tend to multiply and really go wrong. But still I felt that there were just too many things going wrong, too many deaths, too many coincidences and I never really bought into the story.
Grace has lost a lot of people - her parents to start with. Then a school friend dies and her best friend, Charlie, takes off on her own without saying goodbye or where she was going.
Added to this, Grace has serious trust issues; with her boyfriend, with her friends. So when things go missing, she begins to get phone calls where no one is on the other end, she thinks she's being followed and is receieving threatening notes, she doesn't know who to trust. But her new friend Anna should be fine, right? After all, she wasn't around when all this stuff started.
The story is written over two timelines, then and now. Some stories flow seamlessly using this method, mostly this one doesn't. I believe that the story would have had far more impact if it had more time in the 'now' with only occasional forays into 'then' as necessary. It would have ramped up the creepiness factor and perhaps reduced the overload of information which sometimes occurred.
This is a new author and all in all I think she has done a good job of her first novel. The only piece of advice I have to offer is don't overcomplicate things - keep it simple. Oh, and avoid things like 'a brilliant twist you won't see coming ' because it diminishes the impact.
3.5 stars and a big Thank you to Bookouture via Netgalley for providing a digital copy of The Sister by Louise Jensen for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
The Sister by Louise Jensen
I have to say I am right in the middle of the pack on this title. I was fully invested in the beginning and then things just went too.... just too. The recipe for a great book is there but too many ingredients were thrown in. I was neither shocked or surprised but gained satisfaction to know I had guessed correctly. Unfortunately not a memorable read for me.
Thoroughly enjoyed this psychological thriller. There are twists and turns, some of them a little more predictable than others and some surprised me. When you read many thrillers you start to predict the rhythms and techniques but this book managed to keep me reading as I tried to guess the answer to many questions that unfolded. What happened to Grace's dad? What was Anna's real story? Why did Charlie leave? Who was following Grace or was it in her head? Who had sent her the notes?
I liked the characters and the unfolding of events felt realistic despite being extreme at times. The end was a little quick to conclude given the rest of the pace but it didn't spoil my enjoyment.
The main character of this story is Grace and the cover of the book implies something happened, a secret?. We get to learn about Grace, her past and present whilst never quite trusting her.
Grace is struggling grieving the death of her best friend Charlie and the story switches between the past and present but then suddenly her friends long-lost half Sister arrives on the scene and the story takes a sinister turn.
A harrowing tale of friendship, betrayal and loss.
I really enjoyed this book and would certainly recommend it to fans of this genre.
Amazingly it is the authors debut novel so I would also be very interested to read her further books.
My thanks go to the publisher, author and Netgalley in providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review
I love a good thriller/mystery, and from the hype and description, this sounded right up my alley!
Grace has never quite got over the death of her best friend Charlie. You may think it just happened, but that is not true, years have passed. Due to the death being so sudden, she has so many questions as to why this would happen to someone she held so dear. There is one other key point. Charlie left a strange note for Grace. This not apologizes from something Grace has no knowledge of. Why the note? What could this mean?
To find answers, Grace sets about finding family and clues with the help of Dan, Charlies boyfriend.
A mystery woman shows up who says she is Charlies sister. She becomes more and more involved in Grace's life, and more and more strange things begin to occur. Is someone stalking her? Now, here we go, a possible unreliable narrator.
This is another book with a jumping timeline, but it works in this case. That is rare sometimes.
This book, in my humble opinion, lived up to the hype for me. Did things start to play out and you realize what is happening? Yes, but the ride sure was fun!
I received this book from Netgalley for an honest review.
Another quick read that was a little predictable. After a while, the characters annoyed me a bit but I wanted to know what happened. I did like the writing style and I will definitely read something else from Jensen.
What a great big book. I was hooked from the first few pages.
The book flips between the past and present and has lots of twists and turns throughout that at times I thought I'd guessed what would happen but I was so wrong.
A fab psychological thriller that you won't want to put down.
A gripping tense psychological thriller about Grace who is grieving the death of her friend Charlie .. a lot of unsavoury characters along the way and flitting from past of present makes this book a compelling page turner 4.5 stars from me
Really good story! Twists, turns and a few shocking moments. I listened to this book and I wasn't fond of the narrator. This book kept me on the edge of my seat....I had to know how it ends. I'd rate this book a 3.4!
Well, I give it 3 1/2 stars really. It was good and lived up to the thrilling psychological thriller part!! But, maybe because I've read so many of these books the ending was a little predictable and I seen it coming. There were a few surprises that kept my interest, but overall....it was an ok read for me.
