This book was pretty unusual. It was interesting to read a book set in contemporary Russia. All I've read in the past was fantasy versions of it. And also a story set around a real-life tragedy like the Beslan School Siege. After finishing Mother Tongue I had to look up the events, read more about it. It was all so sad and horrible. But I liked how this story was more about the aftermath in any case. Darya and her family trying to move on in their different ways. The people that come into Darya's life because of the tragedy and how they help to give her more options in life. Difficult book to read but an interesting one, that's for sure!
