Having been born in 1974, I have a sentimental interest in the milleiu, which Millward promises to examine through the lenses of music and politics--the disappointments of the late 1960s morphing into a 1970s marred by Watergate, oil embargo, hijackings, backlash on racial progress and both musicians and politicians struggling to adapt. Taken separately, or as two separate books, Millward's observations are fine, with his detailed breakdown of Watergate an especially useful chapter, but by running them parallel, he never successfully links the worlds or makes his point about their sybmiotic relationship.
