Unfortunately I just don’;t get the hype with Liane Moriarty. As hard as I tried I coudln’t really get into this and didn’t enjoy it.
Fabulous book by a fabulous writer.
Liane Moriarty is one of my go to writers when ever i see a new one it will always be on my shelf awaiting me to be enjoyed.
Great book that keep you engaged and entertained
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy
I enjoyed this book and thank Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read it.
I enjoyed this and thought it unfolded really well. Good characters but just didn't completely engage me.
Certainly gotten my reading mojo back, I just hope it's here to last. Playing catch up with some books i've had forever and The Easer having a week off work has been great for getting stuck into books I haven't yet read.
This one was a great choice of reading.
A great storyline with interesting characters.
Once started this is one of those books that keeps you wanting to turn the pages.
Liane Moriarty has a great writing style and any fans will enjoy this book.
I received this ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
Ive posted a full review on Goodreads, I'm looking forward to reading more from this author
Omg......... this book was amazing I flew threw the pages with Olympic speed I was hooked from the very first page. I found it full of twists and turns threw out and it kept me on the edge of my seat all the way threw I would defiantly recommend this book if you like a good book to keep you reading threw the night hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did
Liane Moriarty is very good at understanding human nature and reactions, she knows her characters well and writes them convincingly, but her plots always leave me feeling a little... underwhelmed and sadly this was no exception. Truly Madly Guilty opens being deliberately vague about an event that happened at a barbecue, and then jumps between the present and past to reveal the truth but the pacing of it just didn’t hold my attention enough.
Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy this book. I found it rather dull and slightly predictable. I probably would not recommend it
I didn't really enjoy this book - I had high hopes as I had ready other Moriarty books but this fell a little flat with me.
I really enjoyed Big little Lies and was looking forward to this novel, however, I found myself bored by the pacing and one-dimensional characters. I'll try another novel by the author but this one was not for me.
I'm a big fan of Liane Moriarty, but not only was this book about 200 pages too long, the storyline was weak, I didn't like any of the characters, and the "big reveal/secret" Moriarty usually puts in her books was a big letdown.
This was a tough one for me. I got into the book pretty easily, first with Erika and then with Clementine. I switched allegiances several times, which in my opinion, makes a good book, because you’re always questioning and thinking. But after quite a few a good few chapters the steam seemed to run out. I felt like I was climbing a crumbling mountain, clawing for a reveal which might never come. I honestly felt it was quite slow and needed less of ‘the event’ mentioned in hushed tones, and more of what actually happened. I don’t think the final reveal was worth the immense build up it was given. I wanted something more scandalous, and less focus on the therapy one receives and the marriage of the other. Maybe, as a younger woman with different priorities, this book didn’t relate to me and therefore I couldn’t enjoy it as much. But I would have liked to.
I did completely get what the author was trying to do, but as my first Moriarty book I don’t think it was the best choice. Wish I had started on Nine Perfect Strangers or Big Little Lies. They both seem like they’d be more my speed.
2.5 stars
I don’t just read Liane Moriarty books I wallow in them! The characterisation is always faultless and makes you think at first that the stories are always character lead but then when you realise how engrossed you are in the story you see that’s not the case at all.
Truest Madly Guilty is easily as good as all her other books and I loved it. Laugh out loud one minute and breathless with panic in the next. One of my favourite authors.
I thought this was a good idea for a book, but found it quite slow to get going. Once it got going I really enjoyed it
Following on from Big Little Lies was always going to be a challenge, for me as a reader anyway, as I fell in love with that book from the very beginning and was hooked to the final word, so when I finally picked up my copy of Truly Madly Guilty I guess I always thought it was never going to be quite as good.
Truly Madly Guilty follows three families whose lives are entwined by one fateful summer afternoon when they share a barbeque together. They are Tiffany and Vid (the hosts) with their teenage daughter Dakota, neighbours Erika and Oliver and their friends Clementine and Sam plus their little girls. Lets also not forget Harry, the old cantankerous neighbour who has a habit of ruining everyone's fun and the scene is set for an afternoon that will change the lives of everyone mentioned.
Two months later and Australia is hit by the worst rainfall in it's entire history and its making everyone on edge. Clementine is a bundle of nerves facing her forthcoming cello audition, her children are behaving badly and Sam seems to have hit a mid-life crisis. Despite being best friends for decades, her and Erika seem to be no longer talking to each other, and Tiffany is holding back a secret from her past that she hasn't even shared with Vid.
Liane Moriarty weaves back and forth from the present rainy day, to that summer's afternoon with ease. Telling part of the tale and then snatching it back from you so that you are longing to find out what exactly happened on that day. I'd worked out most of the plot by the end of the book but there was one moment that I hadn't expected and it left me gasping out loud when I read it. This is an author who knows how to tell a tale and by the end I wasn't let down. Okay, so it wasn't as good as Big Little Lies for me, but then I didn't think it ever would be. However it tried very hard to get there.
Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It’s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?
When you read a book by Liane Moriarty you know that lots of things can go wrong and Truly Madly Guilty is a well written novel but not as good as her others.
Truly Madly Guilty ticks all the boxes for an engrossing read. Erika and Clementine's friendship is lifelong and complicated, and it becomes even more complicated after the mysterious events of a sunny afternoon. The mystery continues almost to the end, which made this a compulsive read, but the characters were complex and interesting too.
I loved this book!
When Erika goes to meet with her counsellor, she is told that she is `circling`, telling her story in ever-decreasing circles until finally arriving at the main idea. This is exactly what Moriarty does in this book - every time you think that you're getting close to finding what happened at the barbeque, the narrative once-again spins away from the big reveal. By the I found out what had happened, my heart was beating fast as I was desperate to get to the answer. A guess it's a suburban thriller, really.
If you liked `Big Little Lies`, you'll love this.
Thank you to Penguin Uk - Michael Joseph and Netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book. This was a completely different read to what I’m used to and was definitely worth a change.
