I wanted to read this but it went to too dark a place for me when I have young children. I apologise and I have learned my lesson and I will do better at seeking out books on the subject of things that I find deeply triggering.
The cover was the thing that drew me in but I ended up disliking almost all the characters and just could not believe in a million years that a strange4 would recognise a child when a parent wouldn’t.
This was an interesting book, but I got slightly confused towards the end, which is what let it down I feel.
This was an OK book. I think my biggest problem with this story is the characters, none of them were very likable. The story-line was great & the writing exceptional.
Jason and Heidi are a married couple with a unique connection. Both had children who were kidnapped at a young age. The difference is that Heidi’s daughter, Lauren, was murdered while Jason’s son, Barney has never been found. One day Heidi sees a young boy who she is absolutely certain is Barney. She gets Jason to go & have a look & he is certain that the boy is not his son. He makes Heidi swear that she will not tell anyone including the police about the boy. Despite Jason’s insistence that she drop the matter, Heidi starts on a journey to try and prove to Jason that the boy is his son.
Thank you NetGalley & Bonnier publishing for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
MY HUSBAND’S SON by Deborah O'Connor is a gripping debut psychological thriller about a woman who thinks she's found her husband's abducted son. And you will never believe the lengths this woman will go to prove she is right! She is obsessed with finding out the truth.
You'd always recognize your own son. Wouldn't you?
Heidi and Jason aren't like other couples.
Six years ago, Heidi's daughter was murdered. A year later, Jason's son Barney disappeared. Their shared loss brought them together.
By chance, Heidi meets a boy she's certain is Barney.
But Jason is equally convinced it's not him.
Is Heidi mad? Or is Jason hiding something? And can their fragile marriage survive Heidi's newfound quest for the truth…
Heidi and Jason had been brought together by personal tragedy. They had both lost their children.
The opening scene of the novel is one where a little boy is kidnapped. We move fast forward to a married couple Jason and Heidi, who met at a conference because they had both lost children. Jason, along with his then wife, Vicky had gone through so much after their son, Barney disappeared, that it had destroyed their marriage. Heidi’s daughter, Lauren was murdered.
So many false sightings and subsequent disappointments!
The story is narrated by Heidi, and she explains how on her way home from work she stopped at an off license and saw a boy that looked just like Barney. Heidi contacts Jason at work and brings him to the off license to see for himself…but he says the child is not Barney, and tells Heidi to drop it.
But Heidi is convinced that this child is Barney, and is determined to prove it. Heidi needs to find a link, no matter how small that links the off licence/or owner to Barney’s disappearance.
No more plot details because of possible Spoilers. You will just have to read the novel, to see what happens. Twisted ending that I did not expect.
Heidi’s quote: “Life is a series of trade-offs, of choices considered and choices made. I have made my choice.”
Thank you to Deborah O'Connor, Bonnier Publishing Twenty7 and Netgalley for providing a digital ARC for review.
Finally got around and finished this one. It's just sooo good! I completely understand why everyone was so hooked!
Thank you so much!
Heidi and Jason have one thing in common. They have both lost a child. Heidi’s daughter was found murdered but Jason’s young son Barney disappeared one day whilst out with his mother and has never been found. This shared understanding of their loss is the glue between them but when Heidi pushes their relationship to the brink, she risks her marriage and all they have between them, all because she thinks she is right and Jason is wrong.
It all starts when Heidi spots a young boy in a shop that she believes is Barney. She wastes no time in getting Jason to take a look but after doing so, he is adamant that the boy is not his son. However Heidi is so sure that she is right and she will go to any lengths to prove it.
There were times when Heidi’s obsession with this boy drove her to make the most bizarre and unwise decisions. So much so that I was shaking my head in frustration and shouting at her, “NO, DON’T DO THAT”. Unfortunately she didn’t listen to me and I spent most of the book watching her lurch from one bad decision to another.
I did wonder whether there was some sinister undercurrent going on, especially with Jason. Whilst Heidi went all out to prove that this boy was Barney, Jason didn’t seem that bothered although we are told that he had never stopped looking for him. Was Heidi being completely delusional or was there a reason for Jason’s insistence that the boy wasn’t his son. Thanks to what I saw as the author sowing seeds of doubt every now and then, I was never completely sure of Jason’s role in his sons disappearance – was he truly innocent? In fact as the story progresses, little pieces of information are released which throw a different slant on things.
Despite my issues with Heidi (which are purely personal and if I’m being honest, her behaviour I found to be the most unbelievable), I can’t fault the story for its pace and well-executed plotting together with the careful drip feed of information. As for the characters, they cover all spectrums; from the likeable to the downright creepy and repulsive. Heidi and Jason are both damaged people and I had to wonder if they would ever have got together at all if it hadn’t been for their shared tragedies. As a psychological thriller, My Husband’s Son did its job extremely well, it kept me guessing all the way through and that ending – I didn’t see that coming!
This book was okay, however I probably wouldn't recommend it.
This a debut thriller involving two people (Heidi & Jason) who meet at a support group for those who have lost a child-Heidi, whose daughter was murdered and Jason whose son went missing and hasn't been found. Their shared tragedies are what brought them together. Heidi sees a boy who looks just like Jason's son and becomes determined to find out if this is his missing son. Jason, however, doesn't share her enthusiasm or compulsion for inexplicable reasons and makes her promise to keep this "sighting" to herself. She continues in her search, in the process putting herself in danger, meeting some unsavory characters all along taking the reader along with her on her relentless quest for the truth. This is a great psychological story told in the first person with many twists and turns and an unexpected ending. Very good read.
I really enjoyed this book it had me hooked from the first page i found the ending draw dropping i was not expecting that killer ending i also found some bits of the story a little werid excpecially some sexual scenes i didnt quite understand and found a little insensitive but having said that i did really enjoy the book and found it really interesting to read.
I just loved this book with the twists and turns and the ending.... well I did not expect that.
A great book. Before they got together Heidi's daughter had died and Jason's son had disappeared will they find out what happened, Heidi tries to get some answers for Jason and thinks she has found him......
