Although this book was archived before I managed to download it, I bought it to read because I loved the premise. I ended up devouring the entire series. Extremely enjoyable and I loved the premise and the different characters.
Although I really enjoyed the previous books in this series, despite them being out of my normal comfort zone, this wasn't my favourite book.
When America becomes unwell, Prince Maxon steps down. Eadlyn then needs to find a partner.
I read 'The Heir' last year, and when I started The Crown it took me a while to get my head around what happened previously, but then I started to remember and the story began to flow and it all came back in no time- The Crown continues exactly where The Heir left off. So it wasn't hard to get back into the story.
The Crown is the second half of Princess Eadlyn's story, and follows the second half of her Selection. Something that isn't at the front of her mind at the moment, however, considering her mother is bed-ridden after her heart attack.
Her father is by her mothers bedside, and she has to make decisions about a possible husband on her own. She feels on her own, despite having her ladies, maids, and the six remaining boys by her side to help her on this journey.
Eadlyn makes a lot of decisions for herself- to help herself, and I think that's why I found her character to be slightly problematic, in a similar way that America was in the first three books. I mean, America didn't really have a choice, but Eadlyn does- so that's why I was so surprised by the way she ended her Selection.
I was surprised by her choice more so. The whole novel seemed to be leading up to her union with Kile Woodwork, she even voiced this out loud to her ladies and advisors, she had a plan set in motion....and then she completely goes against that plan and changes her mind, and then goes against that choice to be with someone who wasn't actually part of the Selection at all!
I mean, I understand she was in love, and you can tell by the way it was written, but honestly, she needed to make up her mind and stick to it- even if she did become Queen halfway through. However, despite my animosity over Eadlyn's character, I did enjoy this book.
I had forgotten the world and it was nice to return to the Kingdom of Illea. Although, not all the subjects seem to be as nice as before, especially Marid Illea, who turned out to be a horrible person! Eadlyn learnt that the hard way- she trusted him, she was nice to him, and it backfires!
Still, it was a good story and it was nice to finalise the Selection series through Maxon and America's daughter.
A good read!
This was a really strong conclusion to the series and this duology for me but I didn't like this book as much as the crown. I think Eadlyn begins to think about the country and the royal family more in this book than she does her own wants and needs and that's what I liked about her in The Heir so I think that's why I didn't like this book as much as the first. Again I liked having other characters come up and I really liked the suitors that she has left in this book. All the characters felt real and didn't seem like characters from a fantasy novel but characters involved in a fairytale, in a royal kingdom wanting to be kings and queens. There is of course more drama in this book because it is the conclusion to the series and I really liked that. Overall I enjoyed the ending and thought this was a fitting conclusion to the whole thing.
Easy to read story, not as well thought out as other books. I felt it was rushed and characters had no where to go. Shame as I really enjoyed the earlier books.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review, thank you to the publisher
Oh wow. The series has finally ended. Can you believe that? I have been delaying this book for so many reasons and now I can't even comprehend what just happened. All I can I say is that was very unexpected, I did not at all even see that coming.
This book is a lot different to the fourth one, we see Eadlyn a bit different. She tries to become more like her mother but what she doesn't realise is she already is. Eadlyn is stubborn just like America, she is also very protective of her loved ones and would do anything for them. I really liked Eadlyn in this book (a lot more than the first one anyways). She tries to show more of her personality in this book, her compassion to her people who she deeply cares about. She really shows that she is destined to be a Queen.
Ahren my love, what did you do? I love Ahren so much, I am bit upset that he moved all the way to France because I did enjoy reading about him. *sighs* oh well. Oh. Oh... what a surprise that Ahren's wife ends up being Daphne's daughter?
I really have the need to just dedicate a whole paragraph to who Eadlyn chose, I cannot decide if I agree with her or not. I can see why she chose him but I perhaps would of chosen someone else but then again you don't choose who you get to love. As long as they are both happy, I will be too.
I DID ENJOY ONE PART THOUGH, HOW MAXON'S AND AMERICA'S LOVE DID NOT FADE EVEN AFTER THEY HAD CHILDREN. AND THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY. THEY ARE TRULY THE EPITOME OF #TRUELOVE GOALS!!!
I was very surprised by the plot, I though it would take me ages to read this but I was constantly surprised at every twist and turn. Some of the antagonist that popped up (you know who you are) I never really expected, such a fab series Kiera.
Really enjoyed this book, the whole story concept and the well thought out characters makes for a really good read
Loved it-possibly more than book one. Good to see how the relationship develops here.
In The Heir Eadlyn was annoying and presumptuous. It was hard to see how a love story could evolve. However I was surprised and happy by her growth as a character in such a short space of time she had become a woman I was more likely to admire. She was a much more interesting woman to follow. And by the end of the book I had faith in her.
I liked that we were down to the final six. I thought the choices that Eadlyn had made were the right ones. Each man would make for the perfect suitor. The perfect candidates for prince consort. However a big reveal near the end means that there are only a couple of actual choices. Having said that the person Eadlyn decides on is not the person I would have chosen. Hand on heart. I was cheering after a different man. But c'est le vie. At least it was a twist in my mind.
But I was hardly cheering for this winner. Especially as I felt that there was no real connection between Eadlyn and the winner. There was no suggestion of romance till bam! But seeing as there is only two books in this series and the first one Eadlyn won't commit to the selection there is hardly any time for romance.
This was another brilliant instalment in this series and brilliant and happy ending to an amazing duology. Everything was resolved and everyone lived happily ever after. This was a great ending to the series by my heart will always belong to the original trilogy.
Actual rating = 2.5/5
After nearly two years, I have finally finished The Selection series! Whilst an apt ending to the series, I found that The Crown did leave me slightly disappointed. It is both a fun and a quick read, but I just couldn't connect with the story as much as I'd have liked to.
I liked Eadlyn far more in The Crown than I did in The Heir. She puts her upbringing aside and really begins to understand her people. Basically, the events in The Heir have made her less snobby and she's not as bratty either. I just found her more open-minded and nice in general.
I did really like most of the boys left in The Selection too, particularly Kile. However, I wish there was more interaction between Eadlyn and the boys. I feel The Crown focussed more on the politics of running a country as well as preparing Eadlyn for becoming Queen.
The Crown is once again told from Eadlyn's perspective. Although this was nice, especially seeing Eadlyn become nicer, I didn't really feel I was connecting with her. Particularly in terms of her choice in The Selection. I completely missed any signs of who she eventually chose, so I found it such a surprise and a bit of a shock too. I just didn't see where Eadlyn and her choice made their connection. And, I was really annoyed with her choice too! But I'm not going to give anything away.
Of course, The Crown was not without additional twists and turns, especially with the involvement of Marid. It added some more excitement to what could have potentially been a simple and, even, boring story. However, I did find that a few of the twists were left hanging at the end. I feel like there could have been more closure with Marid. So, this did leave me feeling a bit dissatisfied.
So far, my review does seem fairly negative. However, I really did enjoy the story and could not put The Crown down. I needed to know how Eadlyn's part of the story would end and if she would succeed as Queen. It just so happened to go in a different direction to what I expected or wanted.
The Crown is a good read and it is a nice ending to The Selection series. If I'm honest, like many others, I do prefer the original trilogy. However, I would still recommend The Crown to those thinking of finishing the series. I'd just advise caution.
