Here is a look into the early life of Rommel. His beginnings did not want to be in the military and then when World War One breaks out he is there becomes a Sargent, then moves on to fight in the mountains of Romania and northern Italy. I had known about Italy but not about Romaina. These all would lead him to become the Desert Fox and a top General in World War Two. A good read.
