A spine tingly strange novel, that will entertain and enthrall.
Sci if thriller at its best.
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy for a honest review.
Is this a movie yet? I feel like this might be already, but if not...it should be. Am I happy in my life? Well, things could be better but I feel like overall I'm happy. Would I like to see another version? Absolutely. Would I want to see if I could do better the next time? Of course! Bring it! Would I want the life I have now to disappear so I can have the alternative? Uh, no. No thank you.
I hope this is a film already, I'll be all over it.
I read a review where someone compared this book to Interstellar, and I feel like that comparison succinctly summarises how I feel. The characters and the plot were absolutely fantastic - it's obvious that a lot of planning went into this, and it did pay off. However, it would've been better as a film. I could visualise in my mind what was going on, but if I'd seen it physically, it would've been 5 stars. Without that visual aspect, I found it difficult to really connect with the intense fear and desperation Jason felt, especially towards the end.
And the end is another point in itself. I guess because of the high stakes and emotionality, I thought the book would end in a bang - but it just fizzled out. Everything after 70% was disappointing, and I felt that that undermined the emotions the author had been trying to build since the very beginning. For such a strong concept, it seemed like a cop-out to me.
Nevertheless, I did enjoy it - to me, three stars is still a good rating. The author has a clever mind and a fantastic way of writing, and I'm excited to see what comes next.
*Update - I've just read his bio and apparently 1) he's a screenwriter and 2) he's writing the script for the film adaptation of this book. So yeah...I guess point made (yeah, I'll definitely be seeing that film!)*
