an intense book about a way to rarely talked about part of war history. in some parts this book is very unsettling und even upsetting since there are so many true aspects of the story -even if i am not sure if the book itself actually has true elements if it is entire fiction BUT a lot of the elements in this book were true for a good amount of people!
if you are interested in a real feeling WW2 story about events that are not talked about a lot, give this a read!
I read this novel a while ago, but had overlooked leaving a review. I loved this book and can still recall the story. Some stories stay with me for a very long time and this is one of those. I know a fair amount about how the Polish were treated during the War.
It is June 1940 in Poland. German soldiers are rounding up young Polish adults. They are needed to work in Germany while to young Germans are fighting in World War 2. Anna is the story writer, she is Polish age 17 and together with other friends from her village is sent to work on a German farm. They live and work as slaves, eating disgusting food and regularly punished. Anna tells her story for the next five years and this is a true story. It's very upsetting to read but I found it so fascinating to learn how Anna and her friends gained the strength to survive such dreadful conditions.
