Beautifully understated exploration of belonging and betrayal set against a Cold War backdrop.

I'm the wrong reader for this - I'm just not that into the Cold War as a time period. Tudor history, yes. WW2, yes. Even the Georgian or Victorian era. But the Cold War really really bores me and although Helen Dunmore is a fine writer, I just found it difficult to maintain my attention for reading this. I'm just a bit too sleep-deprived for this one. I think I had fine intentions because Helen Dunmore gets such good reviews but it is definitely a case of me rather than the book.
A fairly interesting book, but I felt it dragged a little at times, and could perhaps have been edited more to produce a slightly shorter, tighter book.
Another new author for me, but I had heard wonderful
things about Helen Dunmore so was eager to get reading.
I had no preconceptions of what kind of book this was
going to be but it turned out to be the very best kind.
Drama, suspense, innocence in the face of guilt, love
and, oh, just so much more made this a riveting read.
Every time I opened my kindle I slipped back into the
story immediately - doesn't always happen that way,
but when it does you know you have a treasure in your
hands.
Told from several different character points of view,
this was a compulsive read, thoroughly enjoyed and most
definitely not the only one of this author's I shall
be devouring! An absolutely well deserved 5 stars!
I received an arc of this book via Net Galley in return for my
