I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
*Only Daughter* by Anna Snoekstra is a gripping psychological thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The writing is stellar, weaving a dark and suspenseful atmosphere that draws you into its web. The story features a perfect blend of intrigue, a bit of romance, and unexpected thrills that make it highly addictive. The mystery surrounding the central plot is both chilling and clever, with twists that kept me guessing at every turn.
The protagonist is complex and relatable, and her journey is filled with emotional depth. The psychological tension between the characters adds an extra layer of suspense, making the stakes feel incredibly high. However, while the book offers a stellar ride, the ending didn’t quite live up to the rest of the story for me. It felt a bit rushed and left me wanting more. Despite that, *Only Daughter* is still a fantastic read for fans of psychological thrillers.
Took me a while to get into, but in the end found it a great plot with a shocking twist at the end. It's about a young woman, homeless and hungry, when caught by the police tells them she was abducted some years before. It's not true, but she looks just like a girl of similar age who was reported missing or abducted some years back. She is reunited with the family, who appear to accept her as their daughter .... or do they? A good story and I did not see the twist coming.
THanks to the publisher for a review copy.
A good thriller is full of twists and makes me go huh? a lot, all of what this story did. I think it helped that this year I'd watched a drama where an abducted/kidnapped (I never know which is the right term) daughter returns. It gave me background info so I knew how the investigation into Bec's return should go, and how certain characters thwarted standard procedure. What the returned daughter does is outrageous, and her reasons are slowly dripped to the reader as the plot thickens. I wanted to know the full truth..,and when I did I wished I didn't. *shudder*
There are some psycho ndividuals who had me on edge while home alone after I'd finished reading it. And what is the obsession with authors using cats who come to an unfortunate end? This is the second such book I've read this month using cats in that way. It made me feel sick, and I'm glad I decided to skim read that part as I sensed it would be horrific.
Despite all that I know I will read it again! I loved the drama, the waiting for the daughter's identity to be unveiled. I really want to know what happens after the end, but I suspect there won't be a sequel. It is awesome and I highly reccomend it, minus the cat scene. The family has issues and then some!
Four and a half stars
Told by 2 voices, Bec and Rebecca. Bec disappears from her home and ten years later Rebecca, who looks very much like her, sidles into the family home - an imposter trying to live the life of her predecessor. This is one dark thriller with some very creepy people. Reading this is like being in a maze trying to find your way out - first one way, then speeding off in another direction. I loved it and found it very hard to put down. What a great story, so different from the usual psychological tales. I hope Anna is busy writing another book especially if it's anywhere near as good as this one!
