The Flame Never Dies offers Nina Kane's harrowing journey as an exorcist, filled with action, dark secrets, and the ultimate test of sacrifice, though some aspects could benefit from further development.

I loved how dark this novel felt and it had some great world building although at times I found it hard to connect with the main character.

The second book and the conclusion to the Stars Never Rise duology was a little bit of a disappointment.

It was patchy with its action and adventure and it felt a little bland and a lot of nothing going on. With the ending like a lot of YA books, the struggle was intense but then the conclusion seems too easy and rushed almost. I do however respect the author for not dragging the series out with another book, and nor did she leave it open ended.

I would say it needed more of a look at how each of the characters were feeling with all that was going on around them. A lot of big moments weren't dwelled upon enough to make me feel empathy for them, and them with each other.

It wasn't a bad duology, but I think perhaps it needed more development of the characters. From the first book to the end, of what changed with them and how the effects have impacted them. Otherwise a decent plot and no love triangles that weren't necessary.

Will no longer be reading or reviewing this book due to lack of interest in the title, and the fact that the title has been archived.

The Flame Never Dies was not the foray into the writing of Rachel Vincent that we expected. Granted, it might have been a better life for us to read a novel of hers that's actually the beginning of a series rather than one of the sequels, but we're not people to get easily confused.

We thought we could manage it. And we did, but good god it was boring. We don't expect to pick up this author's work again. The writing wasn't our style and nothing was shocking.

There were, simply put, no exciting twists or narratives and we wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Rachel Vincent doesn’t really get the recognition she deserves when it comes to her writing. Her Shifter series is one of the best urban fantasy series I have read. The Flame Never Dies is the sequel to The Stars Never Rise, a riveting YA fantasy. It is an interesting combination of a post-apocalyptic scenario and urban fantasy.

Nina Kane and her merry band of exorcists are fighting for survival in the badland wilderness of a world destroyed by a hoard of demons. All humans have become a potential body source to the creatures from hell.

They have tricked humans into thinking they are trying to save them from the imminent threat of the soul devouring entities. Only a small minority of humans can see through the charade. Nina and her fellow crusaders are blessed with the gift of exorcism, and being able to see the demons for what they are.

One of the best bits, as far as I am concerned was the whole demon vs Nina and her sister scenario towards the end. Pure comedy gold, in a post-apocalyptic supernatural surreal kind of way of course.

All that seems and sounds pretty simple, on a purely demonic level of course, but Vincent manages to incorporate a few intricate sub-plots. Including the dilemma of an empty well of souls. She tends to be able to pull her readers in quite quickly with her strong characters and innovative world-building.

I think the only negative is the fact this is supposedly only a two book enterprise. What a shame, it has such potential to be a longer series. It’s a fast-paced YA read with memorable and well-developed characters, and it’s a jolly good read.

This is a tough one. Because the first book in this trilogy was one of my favourite reads of the entire year the year I read it ... I was so looking forward to reading this book. And yet, as soon as I started reading The Flame Never Dies it was like all of the urgency and excitement that I felt at the end of the first book was gone from this second book. So I was disappointed that I didn't carry on. What a shame.
