I had started to tire of this series but my Mum however has grown to adore them! I think the horror and gore of them has worn tiring on me whereas my mum who is made of sterner stuff loves it. Definitely one to split opinion but a good yarn as always and an absolutely fantastic central character.
I love M J Arlidge books and will always read them.
Each new book in this series gets better as it goes on, the books are full of red herrings and a cast of Great characters that keep you highly entertained.
Thank you Netgalley for a copy for na honest review.
Hide and seek is an addicted read full of twists and turns, I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more by this author.
Hide And Seek is the sixth book in this series but the first I have read and although I didn’t have knowledge of Helen’s murder conviction o don’t think it hampered my enjoyment of this book too much.
Helen Grace was a leading police investigator until she was convicted of three murders, she is in prison awaiting trial when we meet her. There are two main stories going on in this book, the first being a killer is on the loose in prison and Helen is trying to figure out who it is as everyone feels at risk of being the next victim and on the outside Helen’s colleague and good friend is trying to find evidence that Helen is innocent and find the real murderer.
This was a book that I wouldn’t have thought would work as it is mainly all in the prison but it does. The book never feels slow as there is something happening all the time, there was a good pace and really good writing by M.J.Arlidge and will have to read the others in this series.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Penguin UK, Michael Joseph for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
M J Arlidge is a fantastic crime writer - one of my favouries, in fact. I can devour several in one binge, and there are few authors I can do this with. The Helen Grace novels are true page-turners.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
I should preface this review by saying that 'Hide and Seek' was my first M.I. Arlidge reading experience. I probably would have
benefitted from starting at the beginning of the series but the book was more than enjoyable on its own terms. Much of this was because of the compelling set-up of the novel. We find Dl Helen Grace attempting to survive prison after being framed. I was immediately absorbed by this set-up and the unfolding story did not let me down.
Helen Grace is an incredibly interesting central character, determined to investigate crime even with the odds stacked against her. MJ Arlidge truly knows how to entertain the reader. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the procedural novel. However, this book had a perfect balance of investigative detail and thrills, as tensions build and Helen is left in a race against time to find an escape.
I am slightly disappointed that I’ve somewhat ruined the series for myself
by starting here. Nevertheless, I am definitely invested in this series.
Book 6 in the Helen Grace series and the 2nd book I've read.
Fortunately the other book in this series that I read was book 5, Little Boy Blue, which flows directly into this one so I already knew what happened and really wanted to find out if it was resolved or not. I think it's a good idea to read these in order as there are ongoing back stories and side stories throughout.
Helen is now in Holloway Prison after the events of the last book, she is trying to prove her innocence but it's difficult with being locked up and trying to protect herself as there are some women who she has sent down who are trying to get to her, she is also investigating a murder that's happened on the same wing Helen is on, so she has a lot going on!
Meanwhile DC Brooks is going against orders to investigate Helen's case and get the evidence needed to clear her name, Gardam is being a complete dick as per usual and I hate him with a fiery passion plus another character in here who needs a good face punch!
Overall I really enjoyed this installment, the plot flowed nicely and the characters were well drawn out with extra information about their lives to make them more well rounded. I have the 7th and 8th books on my kindle ready to go so I think it's time to jump back into this world again very soon!
*Huge thanks to M.J. Arlidge, Penguin UK - Michael Joseph and NetGalley for this copy which I chose to read and all opinions are my own*
DI Helen Grace has always been a firm favourite of mine. Hide and Seek is the sixth book in the DI Helen Grace series, having previously read and devoured all earlier releases. Despite reading book five in the series, Little Boy Blue, over two years ago the plot and that breathtaking ending have been playing on my mind since then. Yes, it's true, I have spent the last two years wondering about the general health and welfare of a fictional character! Book blogger problems taken to a whole new level, maybe?!
If you're new to this series let me tell you this, it is incredibly difficult to start this review as anything I say, anything I hint at could be (is) a massive spoiler regarding a previous book (the massive spoiler is also mentioned in the blurb so don't look )! I will be as vague as possible and hope you don't mind. Helen Grace finds herself somewhere no copper wants to be, in an environment as hostile as they come. I could make a couple of witty puns about a fall from 'Grace' but I won't torture you, dear reader. I have been champing at the bit to find out what was going to happen to our battered and bruised hero and all I can say is wow, just WOW! I loved the environment Arlidge has immersed his lead character in, I really enjoyed the motley cast of characters she met on her journey into the pits of Hell and I'm sorry, I'm going to say it, I loved Helen's fall from 'Grace', dangit!
Whilst Helen is otherwise engaged her right-hand woman, the tenacious DS Charlie Brooks is out trying to right a few wrongs. The two plots run seamlessly alongside one another and I was compelled to keep turning the pages, flitting between the two investigations at breakneck speed. I had a fair idea of whodunit from early on in the book but I was completely wrong. The author has added some very believable red herrings that I fell for; hook, line and sinker.
Would I recommend this book? I would. I think this is my favourite DI Helen Grace adventure so far. I'm not sure this book works all that well as a standalone though as there is a heck of a lot of history that won't necessarily make sense to a brand new reader of the series. My advice would be to start at the beginning and get to know Helen Grace from the start, fall head over heels in love with her just like I did from book one. Oh, and don't read the blurb. It gives far too much away in my opinion ;)
Four and a half stars out of five.
Another incredible read from one of my favourite authors of all time. Superbly brilliant!
Wow, what can I say! This book has to be one of the best in the series. D I Helen Grace is being framed for 3 horrific murders that she didn't commit. Her nephew blames her for ruining his life so kills and manages to make the evidence point to Helen. Helen finds herself in Holloway prison on the other side of the fence. Everyone is out to get her and show her that life in prison is not going to be easy, especially for a copper! Who in fact had probably put half of them away. Nobody apart from Charlie her colleague believes her and she sets out to find out what really happened. Suddenly girls are found dead in their prison cells. Who is responsible? Helen sets to work to find out. A fantastic book which had me reading on late into the night! Cant wait for the next instalment!
Having been an avid reader of the Helen Grace series of books I have to say that this latest installment does not disappoint. Helen is currently on remand in Holloway prisons, where as a police officer she is not the most popular inmate as you would expect, especially as she is serving time along side many women that she has served to put behind bars. Helen's case looks pretty hopeless from the start, however she still has the support of her colleague Charlie Brooks who is determined to prove Helen's innocence and bring the guilty party to justice. Charlie is unaware of just what is going on within the walls of Holloway and exactly how much danger Helen's live is in along with the lives of her fellow inmates. This book is every bit as good as the previous books but i would strongly recommend that you read the series from the beginning, only this way can you truly get a picture of the characters involved and the back story that leads to this particular book.
Book provided by netgalley for an honest review.
4.5 stars
Another brilliant read. I love how Arlidge always manages to surprise me. There's always twists I'm not expecting and it always keeps me guessing. I thought I had it figured out about half way through but I was completely wrong lol.
This book will keep you glued from start to finish. Filled with action, suspense and we'll developed characters it's definitely a must read.
I can't wait to read the next it the series
