Oh my word this book stole my heart and it did actually make me cry at times. You’ll need the tissues for this one.
A tale of heartbreak and upset. Sadly this wasn’t the right book for me and i was left a little bored and wanting more but I’m definitely in the minority as fantastic reviews on here for it. Thank you to netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I gave this book the better part of my weekend and even when it felt draining, I thought for sure it would pick itself up. Something would happen, there would be the full story and it would all come together.
The chapters in this book were disjointed: it reads as if there are three different stories going on at the same time. By the end, two of these storylines join. But it makes little sense and I wasn’t able to appreciate how long it was in coming.
This was a devastating story of a family breaking, I couldn’t sympathise with the character of Maria, who in her grief, rages against her husband. As I’m left more than a little confused by the ending, I can’t say I liked this book. There were also repeated passages and I couldn’t understand their significance so as to be repeated...
I very much need to read someone else’s review, so as to make sense of this book.
Dan, Maria, and Jack are all dealing with loss and grief. This could have been maudlin but it's got a strong vine fo hope that pulls it back.
Oh yes! This book was fantastic and I would definitely recommend it to friends to read.
Great story, kept me interested x
This is an exceptionally well-written story. Intriguing from beginning to end with a twist I did not see coming. Maria's raw grief, Dan's inconsolable sorrow and Jack's confusion about who he is all feel real and believable.
Within the first few pages, this story does more than just tug at the heartstrings, it grasps them hard, pulls at the emotions and does not let go until the last word of the book is read.
All the characters feel real, Dan and Maria especially so. Their grief over the loss of a child and how that loss breaks them and their relationship is heart-breaking to read. Is love strong enough to get them through this devastating period in their lives and where does Jack the amnesiac fit into their story?
Wanting to know the answers turns this book into a total page turner where finding out what happens next is more important than getting a good night's sleep.
I would happily recommend this book to anybody who enjoys a good mystery but it is equally a good family story examining the effect on those left behind of the death of a child.
This book was one of those reads that was designed to slowly unfurl its secrets to you. The book followed three characters and their seemingly disparate storylines.
I found the storyline slower than I tend to enjoy,
If Ever I Fall has been sitting on my Netgalley list for far too long (my apologies to the author and publisher) so I thought it was about time I bumped it to the top of my list and I am very glad that I did. It isn't an easy read by any means. It's full of emotion and raw grief, but it's quite beautifully written. It's going to be one of those books which are hard to review though as it would be so easy to give too much away.
Maria and Dan have struggled with their marriage since losing their 14 year old daughter. I can't even imagine how any parent copes with such a devastating loss. People handle grief differently so I found both of their ways of coping quite believable. Dan threw himself into work, which I think is fairly common, but he's struggling. Maria feels alone with her grief. She spends her spare time writing letters to her lost daughter, as a sort of therapy. They have to try to cope somehow as they have a younger daughter to think about, but their marriage is breaking down. How do you move on as a family from something so horrendously heartbreaking?
Jack is an interesting character. He finds himself at a house with a bloke claiming to be a doctor looking after him after a fall, but he has no recollection of how he got there, why he's there or anything about his past. He's not even sure he believes his name is Jack and he's determined to find out the truth.
I was intrigued as to how Maria & Dan's and Jack's stories would link and was surprised when I realised the truth.
Have a read for yourself. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
*Many thanks to the author and publisher for my copy via Netgalley.*
Brillian book, well written ,with truely believable characters. I went through a whole range of emotions while reading it and felt totally engrosed in the story. I could not put this book down and finished it over a few nights.
Looking forward to reading more from this author.
If Ever I Fall is a heartbreaking book, and a devastating portrayal of grief.
Maria seeks to understand and come to terms with a tragic event through letter writing. These are letters that Maria knows nobody will ever answer. to someone called Sam
This book combines these letters with a narrative that tells Dan's story. His story goes back in time, leading towards a particular event. There is also a man suffering from amnesia who we meet at the very start.
This book is definitely a page turner. It's not going to be a literary classic, but there are strains of Jojo Moyes about it, which give it a warmth and a heart. Easy to read, but very sad.
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read this book.
The book deals with how a family copes with the grieving process after losing a loved one and how it impacts on everybody's lives. Good read.
On this occasion no review as it unfortunately didn't work for me.
I found this to be a somewhat unusual book. I loved the way it was written from different character's perspectives.
At times it could be a little confusing but the general story was very heart rending.
I have to say that i was more than a little disappointed with the ending. I had the feeling that there could have been so much more and it all seemed too rushed at the end.
I found this book very frustrating. I found the story to be very slow going and that the questions I had as a reader through the book were never answered.
The flow of the chapters was very difficult to follow. I often had to flick back to previous chapters to check the dates on them, therefore taking me back out of the story.
As the reader I was frustrated that we never found out why Sam killed herself, I'm aware that this wasn't fundamental to the storyline but feel it would have given the story some missing depth.
It was obvious from quite early on that Jack was in fact Dan and that the young girl he was seeing was Sam.
I was beyond frustrated at the final chapter of the book, it may as well have been finished with the line 'and it was all a dream'.
Overall I found this book very difficult to get into, and had to force myself to keep picking it up. It was a lengthy book in which not an awful lot happened.
A wonderful story guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings and make you sob.
Thank you for the advanced copy of this book.
This reads different to many books. Although I don't usually compare books. This is different in a good way. The chatacters are believable, emotions when reading a roller coaster. Easy to read over a few sittings.
Is holding on harder than letting go?
Dan’s life has fallen apart at the seams. He’s lost his house, his job is on the line, and now he’s going to lose his family too. All he’s ever wanted is to keep them together, but is everything beyond repair?
Maria is drowning in grief. She spends her days writing letters that will never be answered. Nights are spent trying to hold terrible memories at bay, to escape the pain that threatens to engulf her.
Jack wakes up confused and alone. He doesn’t know who he is, how he got there, or why he finds himself on a deserted clifftop, but will piecing together the past leave him a broken man?
In the face of real tragedy, can these three people find a way to reconcile their past with a new future? And is love enough to carry them through?
I read this book in one sitting but felt quite confused while reading it, although everything did become clear by the end. A good, but not great read. 3.5*
If I Ever Fall
A compelling and unputdownable read, with some truly terrific twists. 4* from me.
With thanks to Netgalley and the publisher.
This book was too confusing for me and jumped about from different timelines. You have to really concentrate to make sense of it all and it wasn't good enough to make the effort. I didn't finish it.
A beautifully told story that has hints of Cecilia Ahern. I really enjoyed the story, particularly as it was told in first person, third person and also through the medium of letters. A very well written book with a totally enchanting and heart wrenching tale being carefully unravelled. Excellent.
