Secrets and lies are to be exposed in this gritty thriller. Loved the writing and the story was gripping. Thank you to netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
My first book by this author and one that I thoroughly enjoyed! Megan Fuller is found murdered in her own home. The police open an investigation and the first person of interest is Megan's ex-husband, Danny Shapiro. Danny is a known gangster the most obvious person to look at first. Beth is a crime journalist who stops at nothing to get the story and this one is no different. Beth is an easy character to read and she is extremely tenacious as a reporter, however her ex-husband Ethan also happens to be part of the investigation into Megan's murder.
Ethan is certainly not a straight copper and reading about his shenanigans' made for some interesting reading as did the life that Danny Shapiro was leading. There was plenty going on in this storyline to keep me interested and the last quarter of the book was absolutely brilliant. I didn't see the ending coming or the outcome and I was left feeling like I certainly needed to pick up another one by this author. Incidentally this author also writes under James Raven, JP Carter and Alex Pine.
This was a fabulous page turning Crime thriller set in the East End of London. It drew me right in from the first page right up until the final page . A must read for fans of Martina Cole and Kimberly Chambers .
sadly i found this storyline very predictable and had guessed the plot very early on in the book.
many thanks to netgalley and the publishers for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review
Crime reporter Beth Chambers is one of those reporters that will do anything to get the best story. You know, there are always those ones that get on your nerves and have to go above and beyond, well Beth is one of those, even if it ends up putting her family at risk.
Megan Fuller was an actress who has just lost her job. Not only was Megan fired, but she has been dealing with her own issues as well. Megan comes up murdered. Of course Beth is going to jump on this story. Megan's ex-husband, Danny Shapiro, is a gangster and of course is the number one suspect. Beth has a feeling that it was not Danny though and is going to do everything she can to prove that it is not always the ex, even though he does have a rap sheet.
Beth also has a little help inside the police force. Beth's ex and father to her child works on the police force and tends to give her little tid bits of information that others don't seem to have yet. Beth ends up putting herself as well as her family in danger with this assignment. Will Beth be able to find out who the real killer is though before she is hurt herself?
This story is very well developed and has tons of mystery to keep your attention. I am a fan of Jamie Raven now and will look for other books of her to read as well! Well done!
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read this great read. This is the second book by Jaime Raven I've read, and she just gets better and I can and will equate her to the queens of crimes - Martina Cole and Kimberley Chambers. Well done, and worth your effort.
This booked flowed well at a fast pace that was vital. I was instantly drawn in by the synopsis and interested to read about the corrupted officer within the police force, gangsters and the underworld and a journalist hell bent on getting the news scoop at any cost but whilst following her instincts on the criminal culprit.
The story was well thought out with good twists and turns and plenty of characters to keep up the interest. A good read that was hard to put down.
My thanks go to the publishers, author and Netgalley in providing me with a arc in return for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought it started off a little slow and the first "twist" was not a big surprise. However, the action and suspense really amped up as the story went on and there were more surprises that kept me interested throughout. All in all it was a very good read.
I enjoyed The Alibi so so much that I’ve decided I want to read way more books like this one. One of the reasons why I loved this so much was that the main character was awesome. Beth Chambers was brave and determined to find the truth. And was incredibly smart. Okay, I would’ve never confronted the bad guys the way she did, but that’s because I’m a coward. Not Beth. She rocks.
This is the story of Ben, a crime journalist who starts investigating Megan Fuller’s murder. Beth thinks Megan’s ex-husband and notorious mobster Danny Shapiro might be the killer, but there are plenty of other suspects as well. Meanwhile, we get Danny Shapiro’s perspective, as well as Ethan Cain’s, a mysterious man that behaves suspiciously…
The first chapters packed a few twists that I honestly didn’t expect, which is always appreciated. Also, I do think that the mystery was well-crafted and complex and I would’ve read this in a day if I hadn’t gone to work. I had such a fun time reading this book, that I had to give it all the stars. It was thrilling and fast-paced and even though some tiny things were a bit predictable, the ending caught me completely by surprise.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes mysteries and thrillers, especially with strong female leads! It's a very exciting book. So many twists and turns. Some I saw coming and some that came out of absolutely nowhere, and I pride myself on being able to predict what's going to happen next in books of this genre. I love when they manage to surprise me.
Journalist Beth Chambers works the crime beat. She's so good at her job that it actually has put her in danger before... but never like this. Nicknamed "The Ferret", she's relentless at chasing leads and figuring things out, often before the police do. Like many journalists, she has little birds inside the police force that feed her information... including her duplicitous ex husband and father of her child.
A major story breaks, and as is often the case, Beth is on it. A former soap star has been brutally stabbed to death in her own home. After losing her job, celebrity Megan Fuller was plagued with not only money troubles but personal ones... among them a divorce from notorious gangster Danny Shapiro. It's always the husband, right? Danny has a violent history complete with a criminal empire inherited from his father and a shoddy alibi. Beth becomes obsessed with proving that he killed his former lover, no matter what it costs.
I liked Beth, though she's reckless to a fault. She has a very young daughter at home who is mostly cared for by Beth's mother as Beth works. She often puts herself in danger for the good of the story, seemingly not thinking about how the consequences of that might affect her darling daughter. She's incredibly driven and brave, though. A very interesting character.
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Avon Books, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.
This was a fast paced well written, gritty crime drama with lots of twists and turns. Set in London and surrounding areas. A plethora of characters from all types of backgrounds give you an abundance of suspects.
A perfect crime needs a perfect alibi…
Crime reporter Beth Chambers is committed to uncovering the truth – and she’s not afraid of bending the rules to get there.
When troubled soap star Megan Fuller is found stabbed to death in her South London home, all eyes are on her ex-husband – the notorious gangster, Danny Shapiro.
Determined to expose Danny as a cold-blooded killer, Beth obsessively pursues him. But in her hunt for the truth, her family are set to pay the ultimate price…
Secrets, lies and revenge brim to the top in this gritty thriller. Perfect for fans of Martina Cole and Kimberley Chambers.
With a hosts of mixed characters the story keeps you interested.
Knowing that Megan was willing to blackmail anyone she has dealt with in the past just gave more options to the murderer, great story with a good twist at the end. Recommended read.
Wow I'd lost my reading mojo but this book definitely found it again for me. I couldn't put it down I was drawn into the story straight away. Jaime writes in a believable way and really brings his characters to life. Some of the characters weren't likeable but some I liked but got frustrated by some of their actions. I would like to see a follow on for some of the characters. I liked the twists and turns as soon as I thought I'd worked something out another twist changed my thoughts. I've now purchased thee madam which I hope I enjoy just as much. I will be recommending this to my book loving friends.
Crime Reporter Bethany Chambers faces some tough times. trying to discover who murdered Megan Fuller, Automatically she assumed it was Megan's ex husband, reluctant local hard man Danny Ships to, son of Callum Shapiro who currently resides in prison.
Bethany Chambers is a fiesty, stubborn reporter, who once she gets an idea for a story there's no stopping here, she's not above bending the law when it suits her.
All of this combined makes it a quick, easy read page turner,,
If you like the Martina Cole genre, you'll love this.
I love the main character, Beth, an ambitious crime reporter who will do almost anything to break a story and get at the truth. Fast pace read with well developed characters.
This was a very easy read but still a good book. Corrupt cops, gangsters and movie stars coupled with enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested. The book jumps between three main characters of Beth, Ethan and Danny and moves at a fast pace. This would make a really good holiday read. Many thanks to Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads.
I really enjoyed The Alibi, an exciting fast moving read. Jaime Raven builds up a range of believable characters, some of who you can really warm to.
I was totally engaged in this tense story, in parts of the book you find yourself screaming advice and .some unexpected twists kept me engaged and desperate to read more despite my tired eyes!
I look forward to further books by this author and would certainly recommend to fans of Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers, etc.
Thank you.

A brilliant and gritty story - almost as good as Martina Cole.
