One of the great things about NetGalley is the opportunity to read books, in eformat, that have been unavailable for years and Rosalind Laker is one of these authors. I have read several of them in the last year and have enjoyed them once again. The Sugar Pavilion was one I had never heard of and was looking forward to reading it. Tells the story of a young confectioner, who worked with her father in Paris at the time of the French Revolution, being forced to flee to England in order to avoid being killed as she worked for a member of the aristocracy.

When she fled the country she took the young heir to the title with her to save him from the mob. She ends up working in Brighton and gradually making a life for herself there though she is threatened by a mysterious Frenchman who is out to track her and the young Viscount down.

I found this particular title not so good or as well written as her previous books and ended up feeling slightly disappointed in the rather stilted and, at times, static narrative. It was all wrapped up too neatly at the end with all being happy and settled and wrongs righted. Nothing to complain about in a happy ending but somehow this did not quite ring true.

Overall a good read but somewhat lacking
