Did not enjoy at all. Too much back and forth. Did not connect to any of the characters and just seemed to drag on

The Good Daughter is a book that I've been putting off reading because of the very varied reactions from my friends on Goodreads, some loved the book, and some ... did not. It's also a thick book, and being unsure about my reaction and seeing the thick book made me read other books instead. However, I braved it (since I'm trying to get through my NetGalley pile) and was pleasantly surprised at how interesting the book was, at first. I was curious to learn more about Dahlia and her mother, and what her mother is hiding. However, the book never turned out to be as good as I hoped it to be...

THE WHOLE REVIEW WILL BE POSTED ON 28TH DECEMBER!

This is a good, modern story. Dalhia has returned to the small American town of Aurora. She left 15 years ago. Dalhia's mother Memphis is some what erratic and avoids all of Dalhia's questioning about her birth certificate and social security number. Dalhia has had to work menial cash only jobs. Memphis's behaviour becomes much worse and Dalhia has more trouble when she stumbles across an almost dead woman, while out running. Can she find answers she seeks? Read on.

The Good Daughter - Sorry unable to review it. Couldn't finish it.

I really struggled to get into this book, I tried but found plot at times lacked flow and clarity. The slow pace made it difficult to maintain interest. I prefer my books to be fast paced and gripping, while the plot had potential the time it took to get there was a let down.

Thanks Netgalley for giving me the chance to read this - However i do not feel i can do this book justice by writing a review as i found its pace so so slow, and i could not get into it at all. I had no idea where it was really headed and i wasn't that interested to find out either :(

Thanks to NetGalley and Avon books for the opportunity to read this book in exchange of an honest review.
The Good daughter was very slow from the start and to be honest did not (for me) pick up very much…However it was good enough for me to keep going with it.
Dahlia’s childhood was a mass of secrets and lies, it seemed to me that as a child she should have been taken under the wings of Social Services. Even if she did go to school she was never in one place long enough to make friends.
When her mother eventually takes her to live in Aurora Texas, they finally settle into a home. However, Dahlia can’t wait to leave the town and her mother, she doe only to return 15 years later where she discovers her mother is in bad health both mentally and physically.
Dahlia is looking for answers to her poor childhood, the things she discovers help her to understand what makes her mother tick.
This is a good family saga and one I would recommend.

I have posted this review on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Amazon and will tell my friends about it.

The whole book just seemed too much like hard work with not much reward. The many storylines made far a rather difficult style to like for me.
I "solved" the mystery quicklynenough and felt the rest not worth the effort.

Having enjoyed Little Girl Gone by this author I was hopeful for more of the same... I found this one very slow paced and not as interesting.
I would still look out for more by this author though

Having previously read and loving one of Alexandra Burts books when i spied this on netgalley, it was a given that i would request it. We follow the journey of Dahlia Waller as she returns home and is seeking answers, her only memories of her childhood are in and out of cars, motels and never having the paperwork. After she heads out for a run one morning and finds something horrific - she needs these answers more than ever.

This is a real twist and turn taking tale told over years and memories from different perspectives and it didn't feel like a thriller in the typical sense to me. It was something different, I however didn't manage warm to Dahlia, i really wanted to but there was something about her character that didn't warm my heart. As we start to learn more about Dahlia and her mothers pasts i felt that Alexandra really tried to build a world where things were so much more different then than they are now.

The good daughter was a very cryptic tale and takes the reader on a journey through a lot with Dahlia, but parts of the the plot just didn't work for me, i really wanted to love this as much as i loved her other work - but i just couldnt. Whilst i loved the concept, and the questions it led me to ask - this wasn't really for me. I felt parts for me as a reader were a bit too far fetched and i can understand how for others this would really appeal and work for others.

It's a real shame that i didn't love it more, but give it a go yourself - because it might be perfect for you.

This was a somewhat confusing story. Especially in the beginning with the jumping between Dahlia to Quinn to Aella to Memphis. Figuring out the mystery wasn't that hard. Watching the characters getting to the point that they solve the case about this dysfunctional family took some time. Sometimes the pace was so slow that it was hard to get on reading and not jumping a few pages forward.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley and Avon Books UK!

Not reviewing as just couldn't get on with this book.

I found this book to be a little difficult to keep up with. There are minimal main characters but the book flits between past and presents, dreams and reality making it very difficult to read. The ending was a little predictable bar a couple of questions.

Although initially difficult to get into, I'm glad I persevered with the good daughter! The two tales of Quinn and dahlia were well blended alongside each other making for a good read

I was given an ARC of this book from Netgalley for an honest opinion of its content.
Alexandra Burt's THE GOOD DAUGHTER is a haunting, sometimes disturbing portrayal of the relationship of a mother and daughter and the lifetime of secrets that follow them wherever they go.
Told in revolving points of view, Dahlia and Memphis Waller are a mother and daughter in crisis. A crisis that only the past can resolve.
From an unconventional upbringing to a modern day mystery, Burt weaves the past with the present in a story that - at times - I was mesmerized by while I was reading. Her use of language and visual imagery are beautiful and hypnotic in the way the characters, their lives, their thoughts and their motivations are portayed and shown.
This was a difficult book to read all at once. There is a violent backstory that is at the heart of the story and when the story is told, unraveling it in pieces, it makes the reader cringe - but in a good way as you root for Quinn, the girl at the heart of Memphis's story.
I highly recommend this book.

I found this book very hard to get into and I am afraid that I skipped a few pages through it having way too much detail. I am not sure I can find the right words to give a constructive review so shall leave it at that

Thanks to netgalley for having the opportunity to have read this book. The book started off slow but the ending came together nicely and was very entertaining. Recommended.

A little girl called Pet and her mother never settle anywhere, they travel from town to town where the mother takes low paying jobs. One day they are pulled over by police in a town called Aurora and the girl and her mother, now known as the Wallers, finally settle down. Pet, now renamed Dahlia leaves Aurora and her controlling mother as soon as she’s old enough, but comes back years later when it becomes apparent that her mother needs her. One day on a run, Dahlia stumbles over a woman, half dead and buried in a shallow grave. The Jane Doe is in a coma, no one knows who she is or where she came from. Dahlia becomes obsessed with Jane and starts an investigation that will lead her back to her own bizarre and twisted beginning in the town of Aurora where she was born. Burt’s story is like an intricate jigsaw puzzle, just when you think you know what’s happening, the piece you found doesn’t fit. With a little superstition, a little magic and an incredibly intricate plot, Burt will keep readers spellbound
