A Great adventure book full of twists and plenty of action. Great characters and well written plot. Full on entertainment
Thank you netgalley for a copy for an honest review
This was not my usual genre of novels, but I found that I really enjoyed reading it. As a reader, you have to suspend your disbelief at some times, but for sheer fun and wanting to keep reading, it was great - not a book that was easy to put down!
DNF'd. Unfortunately just wasn't the book for me. Apologies for not being able to present a proper review but thank you for giving me the opportunity to try and read this novel.
This is a thrilling adventure story. It tells the story of Eleonora (Ellie) Mallory from London and Adam Bates from San Francesco. She was an office clerk who found a mystery object and decides to return it to the place where it originated from Hell in the New World.
The journey from old civilised world to ‘Hell’ as Ellie took that possession and fled the villains who followed her across the Atlantic Ocean. She met Bates, who had a sense of humour like Indiana Jones.
This was a fast-past rollicking thriller and I hope that there will be more sequels of Ellie’s adventures.

Light and entertaining, I really enjoyed reading this book. Despite being set in 1989, Ellie was profoundly relatable and likable - she's an adventurer at heart not to mention quick-witted, funny and thoroughly competent. The spark between her and Adam is immediate and I enjoyed watching them butt heads and look out for each other.
The fast pace and light humour throughout went a long way to balancing out the fantastical elements of the story, and I found myself gripped by the book to the very end.

Go girl go – who needs Indiana Jones when you have Ellie? She can beat you to Eldorado any time! Yes, H. Rider Haggard we finally have a female heroine to match your males...
So yes, here we have an adventure story very much in the style of H. Rider Haggard and all the expected attributes of such a story: a villain who is manipulating behind the scenes; his merciless henchman ready to kill anyone who gets in his way; maps; and mysterious artefacts; codes; and explosions; and jungles and....
Wonderful nonsense and great fun reading. Will make a tremendous film.
Right up my alley. If you like the Mummy films, Indiana Jones and adventure then, this is for you. Yes, I could tell what was coming next but who cares. Escapism at its best.
I am a female modern archaeologist so I definitely enjoyed this book. The archaeological practice was true though the myth was....expanded so I will say that the archaeology was well done. The romance was done humorously and Eleanora was as great to read as I'd hoped. A well-done archaeological mystery!
A relatively enjoyable read and a sort of 19th century version of the film 'Romancing the Stone', with a science fiction style end.
Set in London 1898, The Smoke Hunter follows the story of Eleanora Mallory who finds a mysterious necklace and secret map to a lost South American civilization one day at work (as you do).
Excited by the prospect of discovering a new unmapped city in South America, Eleanora sets off armed with her map and a few supplies gathered at short notice with the help of a good friend.
Unfortunately, others have learnt of the map and are in hot pursuit including the
There are treasures in the lost city that people will kill for and The Smoke Hunter gears up for a fast race between Eleanora and her pursuers.
Early on in the book Eleanora teams up with maverick archaeologist Adam Bates and the book then follows the classic friction romance type relationship as they first argue constantly and then... (well, that would be a spoiler).
I really enjoyed the Smoke Hunter. The plot moves along at a good pace and there are enough twists and turns to keep it really interesting.
The romance subplot adds an extra layer of interest but in sections, it felt like that author slowed down the action too much to focus on the character's romantic monologues. However, these were only temporary and we soon resumed the pace.
A really good adventure romance novel.
I loved this quote from Stephen Leather about the book and just had to include it again here.
'The illegitimate love-child of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones... Fast-paced and action-packed' Stephen Leather
A fun romcom / adventure story akin to Indiana Jones and Romancing the Stone. Smoke Hunter is a bit smoky, but not red-hot. Crazy, headstrong and educated woman goes off to do something highly risky and needs saving by rude but gorgeous and experienced man. I think as long and you start reading knowing what you'll get, then you won't be disappointed. Fast-paced, highly convoluted, fiercely charged, modern values thrown onto an historical story, strong female character to warm to... great story.
I enjoyed this book with its many twists and turns. It held my interest throughout and the final chapters in the caves reminded me of my favourite film of all times - Jumanji. What more can be said other than being scared doesn't prevent you from wanting more.
