A book with a very difficult subject matter and may not be for everyone. However I thought it was an excellent read and will definitely read more from this author.

Thanks to netgalley for the chance of reading this book.  The book dealt with a difficult subject but it was done well and with sensitivity.
Worth the effort.

I was really looking forward t this as I'd read a lot about Joy Fielding - hailing her as a real force to be reckoned with in this genre. Maybe it was this which made me ultimately feel a little bit disappointed in this book on the whole. I found Bailey to be little more than a cliche and found her hard to relate to or warm to as a central character. The plot sounded good on paper but I found it fairly predictable and it didn't thrill me or keep me on the edge of my seat, I'm afraid. Give me Hitchcock any time, I'm afraid.

“Oh, God! I don’t want to be in her shoes!”

That was my first thought when I started this book.

What happens when you are a victim and you don’t know who is the predator? What happens when you see and hear your attacker everywhere? Even when there is no one there?

Bailey Carpenter has been attacked. Pulled in the bushes at night and raped. Now she is going through the hell. She can’t identify her attacker and she sees him everywhere. She hears him everywhere. The phone is ringing even when it is not actually ringing. She is afraid to get dress, she is afraid to eat, afraid to go outside her apartment.

Bailey’s hallucinations are mixed with her memories and it is hard to distinct what is real what is not. There are moments when you ask yourself when it is going to be over. Bailey is confused and she sees her rapist everywhere, in the elevator, in the gym, on the street, on the window across the street. She accuses almost every man she meets. Can mind of a victim be so confused?

A little help comes from her family. She is not in a good relationship with her half-siblings, so she doesn’t know how to react. Do they really care about her or they are using her situation? There is only one way to find out.

Things go into a different direction when Bailey starts to stare with binoculars across the street. There is a man in the apartment across the street who brings different women at home every night. Then there is a woman, possibly the wife, who shows up in the apartment, but he is very cold with her. And then, there is violence.

Bailey becomes obsessed with the man. Is he an abuser? What did he do to his wife? Is she all right? Is it possible that he is the man who attacked her? What to say to the police? She cries wolf all the time! Why is she watching him? He deserves privacy.

Doubts, doubts, doubts! All the time. She doesn’t even trust herself. Can her nightmare finally be over?

If you are a fan of The Girl on the Train, you gonna love this book. It is quite different, but also quite similar when it comes to the main character. There are parts of the story when you want the doubts to be over, it’s like crying wolf all the time. But there are parts when the story becomes intriguing and grippy. The end itself is not predictable, which is a big plus, but also it didn’t leave my jaw opened. There are twists and unpredictable moments making this book more interesting. After finishing the story, I think that it definitely deserves a try.

My opinion: 3,5 /5

First of all, this is not a typical "whodunit". The focus of the story is on the main character and her struggle through the trauma she experienced. Descriptions of her PTSD felt so real that as a reader I started experiencing some of her anxiety (mixed with an overwhelming curiosity to find out more). Since Bailey is the story's narrator, her perceptions become the reader's and I loved spending a good portion of the book twisting and turning various theories in my head. The final part of the ending felt slightly rushed but overall it was a truly pleasant reading experience. One I would definitely recommend to lovers of this genre or anyone looking for a "you won't be able to put me down" type of mystery.

I fell in love with Joy Feilding's books years ago, but haven't read one in a while. I was very eager to read this one. This was truly a psychological thriller, one that kept me guessing from the first page to the last

I love Joy Fielding and she has written another gripping story. This book reminded me of "Rear Window" Couldn't put it down until the last page.
