I am sorry to say that this was a book that I struggled to finish. The problem for me is that the main character, Ruth, was a very unlikeable person. She came across as uncaring and selfish despite all the trials and tribulations that she goes through. Her story sees her going through so much due to the war, and yet not once was I even close to feeling sorry for her, or wanting to shed a tear. Normally I would be sobbing at some of what happens to her. Even when she had her happy ending I didn't feel thrilled for her.

Perhaps if the author put fewer problems for Ruth to deal with and spent more time building up her character and making her more emotional during those times I might have had a better liking for her. I can't give you any examples of what I mean because that would be a spoiler, but suffice to say that as much as I would like to, I really can't recommend this book.
