This book was a bit of a mess, the beginning seemed to rely on only sex and attempted rape to move the story along while the ending took on a more serious look at the era it was set in. The main characters are also at points annoying, vain and manipulative.
Set in the 1870's in the final stages of the Franco-Prussian war (not the regency era as the cover would have you believe). this follows the life of Val Finch a poor shop girl who finds herself in a precarious situation and is rescued by an unknown cousin who happens to look like her. The cousin offers to take her to Paris, where everything turns out much different to what she expected.
