Wow! This book had me guessing to the very end. I think a book that keeps me guessing and coming up with my own theories is always a good indicator of a well written and fascinating read.
Lead character Jo is depicted as a woman on the edge who is suffering from anxiety and agoraphobia which has worsened since the birth of her daughter Elise. Her relationship with her husband on the surface appears to be normal until the psychological wargames begin with the introduction of the shady Paula.
When crazy and unexplainable events start to happen such as the ransacking of her house and drugs being found hidden in the bathroom we start to question if Jo is on the verge of a breakdown or if something more sinister is happening. Jo herself understands just how desperate the situation is and as a result flees from her family home to her one and only 'safe place'.
Without giving too much away the twists and turns of this book had me well and truly hooked. The change in narrative was a nice touch and again completely shocked me when it all got down to the nitty gritty.
A fabulous read that I would recommend truly if you like major twists.
I am a big fan of C.L Taylors books and this one didn't disappoint but I have to say it wasn't my favourite book.
It was full of supsense in the first half but I have to say the second-half wasn't quite so exciting and is the reason for me giving it 4 stars instead of 5 stars.
Still a great book though and well worth a read, I can't wait for the next one from this author.
The structure of this jam-packed, fast paced novel is well-laid out, moving from the protoganist's voice to a mysterious person continuously. While the enigmatic chapters were less than mysterious, as I figured out who it was near the beginning, it is clear and not too overdone. It is sad as there are many mothers treated this way especially through the systems, not believed and thought of as unfit. Hence it seems realistic with a sense of tension throughout.
Another great book from this author. Love the plots he creates and characters of such evil
This thriller was ok! As you quite often find the cover and the storyline looked better than the actual book. Jo is married to Max. She suffers from anxiety and agoraphobia but still manages to work. They have a two year old daughter Elise. Jo suffers every day and finds Max, an investigative reporter, of no help. One day while leaving work on the way to collect her daughter at nursery, she is approached by a strange woman who gets into the car with her. The woman, named Paula, says that Max has something he stole from her and she wants it back! Or Elise will suffer the consequences. No-one believes Jo! Read on as we find out that Jo will do anything to protect her daughter.
Absolutely loved this. Kept me enthralled, couldn't put it down and I am normally quite disciplined!
Well written and intriguing. You wont be disappointed.
I haven't read any of C.L. Taylor's books before and it didn't take me long to read this one. I was intrigued throughout this book and gripped me from the first page, a typical thriller. I didn't think that it was Max doing all those horrible things to Jo, I was made to feel sorry for him at the beginning. I did enjoy this book although there was a lot of tooing and frowing from city to city and got on my nerves a bit. I also enjoyed this book as I live in Bristol and related to the sights etc. I think I would read another one of her books. Thanks you for letting me read and review this book.
I could not complete this. Review will not be posted online.
Cally Taylor does it again. Where do I start? It is gripping from the word go. Told from the perspectives of all the protagonists, this novel twists and turns its way from start to finish. Jo believes a women is out to get her and her daughter. She flees to Ireland in a bid to escape - but is she really safe? And who is really after her? I am not saying any more because I don't want to spoil it! But a fantastic book from start to finish.
A fast paced psychological thriller which delivers plenty of tension but doesn't really bring anything new to the genre. I had guessed a couple of the twists from quite early on so the ending wasn't that much of a surprise.
That said, it's an easy, quick read and I liked the plot. I think I have probably read too many of this genre to be blown away by this one.
My thanks to Netgalley for this copy.
Gripping read from the offset. Real page turner. Highly recommended
Loved this book! Jo Blackmore is a young mother with a tragic past who is struggling to cope with her increasing anxiety and her desire to keep her daughter Elise safe. One day she is threatened by someone called Paula who seems to know her husband Max but he denies all knowledge. She believes it's someone who he exposed in his job as an investigator. What follows is lies and hurt and disbelief. What I loved about this book is how easy it is for someone to discredit you and how easy people can be manipulated to see what you want them to see not what is true. You could feel what Jo is feeling just by reading and imagining. A really good story with some twists
I really liked this book, I thought the plot was believable and the characters were well thought out, I liked Jo and Paula completely freaked me out, the ending was a shock I thought. It was very fast paced and had me gripped from the minute she gave the guy a lift.....it was a creepy read and I Thoroughly enjoyed it as I have all her previous books! I couldn't put it down!
A confusing story about Max, his wife Jo and their 2 year old daughter. I was getting very confused with the plot and am still not sure that I understood it.
I really like C L Taylor's books. Gripping and always with a few twists and turns. The pace was excellent and I did enjoy the story. It held my attention right to the end,
This book, as with this author's previous books, It is a rollercoaster from start to finish. Jo Blackmore is on her way to collect her daughter, Elise, from nursery when a woman asks her for a lift. The woman says that her son lives on the same street. She knows Jo's name and her husband, Max, and daughter. Jo feels very anxious of this woman and tells her to get out of the car. The woman tells her to give Max a message.
The events that follow leave me wondering what and who to believe. At times, I thought Jo may be imagining things but her fears for her daughter make her want to get away to keep her safe.
I highly recommend this psychological thriller to readers of suspense. Could not put it down.
I have read all of CL Taylor's previous books avidly, so when 'The Escape' became available, I jumped at the opportunity.
For the most part the book delivered it's perceived promise. Main character Jo Blackmore has an undisclosed secret from her past and a mental health condition that prevents her doing things she wants to enjoy. She depends heavily on husband Max, and is over-protective of her young daughter Elise. When she agrees to give a stranger a lift, the reader knows before the threats even start coming, that things are about to go very, very wrong. As Jo's life begins to spin dangerously out of control, she becomes estranged from Max, and she risks losing everything, including custody of her beloved Elise, Jo decides her only option if she is to keep her sanity and her daughter is to flee their current life and go into hiding.
Part two details Jo's flight and her new life in hiding with disguises and new names for both her and Elise. Part two has a very different feel to it and was very clearly intended to be a new start. It didn't grip me as the first part had, but felt much safer - again, possibly intentional on the author's part. For me personally however, this lost the book marks as the transition felt too abrupt and for a short time at least it felt like I was reading a different story.
As Jo's secrets, and Max, begin to catch up with her the book begins to pick up again, but never quite recovers its initial pace.
Nevertheless, a thoroughly enjoyable read.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
This was a fast paced thriller that had me hooked from the first page. I ended up reading it well into the early hours as I had to find out how it ended.
Totally recommend it and I give it 4 stars.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I really like this author and have read quite a few of his/her books and this one did not disappoint
