A psychological thriller that drew me in from the start and had me confused right to the end. Terrific read.
Another great book by C L Taylor. Lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I was gripped throughout and couldn't put this book down.
Thank you very much for sending me The Escape to review.
I've read C L Taylor's previous books and was looking forward to reading this one.
This book had me absorbed from start to finish with it's great story line.
In three short words - I LOVED IT!
Oh My Lord!
From the first chapter i felt like i was in the book, which I love!
If someone hadhave got into my car I would have knocked them right out straight! But thats by the by.
This read was fast paced all the way through and made me feel like i was the one doing the running, i shifted my seating on many occasions whilst reading, and hubby asking if i was ok !
C.Taylor never fails to delight me with her writings, this was full of avenues of danger ,fear and panic and a total maze of travel for 'Helen and Ben'.
I did have to have a break from it because i was almost exhausted from the tension which was fantastic,
I won't tell the story the synopsis is already there and I am not one to give anything away but be prepared for a Run!
More soon from C.Taylor i hope
I've read and loved all CL Taylor books, this was no exception apart from a couple of little niggles. This was a long book, not a bad thing but it took so long to grab my complete interest, I was beginning to lose faith that it would.
I have to say that once things got interesting, they really did get interesting, lots of twisty side stories to confound and confuse and even though some things were very obvious it was all in all a good book.
I'm still a fan znd will be waiting for the next book
A young mother who suffers from anxiety and agoraphobia believes that she is in danger from a female stalker. But who is she really at risk from? The problem might be closer to home. Her husband doesn't believe her and says it is just her imagination. Paranoia or not she leaves everything behind to protect her young daughter. But is she running away from or towards danger? You can never fully escape from the past. Full of suspense and unexpected twists this latest psychological thriller is another triumph from Cally Taylor.
Throughout this book I wasn't sure whose narration to believe and with its nail biting finale this is a must read.
I have read most of C.L. Taylor's books and enjoyed them, so was really looking forward to reading this one. It did not disappoint and I was gripped from the first few pages.
The Escape is a brilliantly written psychological thriller with characters you could empathise with or despise, and a twisty plot that keeps you rushing through the pages to find out just what is going on.
In my opinion, this is C.L.Taylor's best book so far.
Thank you!
A good thriller, all round. Perhaps not my favourite of this author, but still well worth a read.
Whilst this lacked some of the spark of the previous C.L Taylor's psychological thrillers I have read, I did still appreciate the ending here, slightly more pedestrian in pace but worth a read most definitely.
I really enjoyed the pace of the first part of this book. Jo appears a nervy paranoid mother and her encounter with Paula escalates things keeping the reader drawn in. Does Max know Paula why is she harassing them until Jo has to escape. The second part in Ireland slows right down and not as fast paced as the first part. I was glad when it got towards the end and things were interesting again.
This is the first time I have read anything by this author. I found the book to be very fast paced and different. The author took a slightly unusual line with the story and kept the pressure on all the way. I found myself really looking forward to another session of sitting on the edge of my seat, wondering what might happen. Thank you
I really really wanted to like this book but I'm afraid I couldn't even finish it. I found the characters to be incredibly childish and annoying and the whole plot to be incomprehensible. I'm sure there will be lots of people who disagree but this one just isn't for me I'm afraid.
I must say that CL Taylor certainly fits the genre Psychological Thriller and this latest one is no different although should you have asked me at the halfway point I may have disagreed. Jo Blackmore is the centre of the story and it becomes apparent pretty quickly that she is struggling with a number of issues. Agra-phobia, anxiety, a history of depression as well as having to work as well as look after her young daughter Elise. Her husband Max by contrast seems to be the calm to her storm and as an Investigative Journalist it seems he has his work cut out for him. When Jo is on her way home one day by a supposed neighbour who wants a lift she is torn between turning her down flat and just relenting so as not to appear rude. She agrees to give this woman a lift and 'Paula' introduces herself. At this point the story takes a turn.
It seems that Paula is not a friendly neighbour but a woman who Jo is certain is out to harm both her and her daughter. The next few chapters explore Jo's increasing anxiety and paranoia as things continue to spiral. This theme seems to fill the first half of the book, hence my earlier comment. It was certainly gripping as you are trying to work out what is fact and what is fiction in Jo's head, however it didn't have that normal edgy psychological feel her books have...until! Yes the second half. This for me was where the author totally takes us back to her normal style where you are slightly edgy while reading just waiting for the worst to happen.
Having now finished the book and loved it, I feel like the first half of the book needed to be written the way it was to make the reader question everything and as such it was a brilliantly well written book. Having said that, I was also slightly irritated with Jo in the first half hence why I knocked off half a star! The second half of the book I read in one straight sitting and refused to put it down. The weird thing is even though the first half found me shaking my head in annoyance in parts this still felt like a book you HAD to read. Now I have finished it and can absolutely recommend this highly. Another fabulous read by the very talented Cally Taylor.
C.L. Taylor does it again! I cannot wait for the next one! Thoroughly enjoyable and will keep you gripped, until the very end! Highly recommended!
Jo Blackmore struggles with life. Agoraphobic and prone to panic attacks she does her best as a mother to Elise, wife to Max whilst holding down a job. And whilst it's difficult she's coping. Just. Then one night running late to pick her daughter up a stranger persuades Jo to give her a lift, convincing her of a shared acquaintance. But as soon as woman gets in the car she reveals her true intentions.....to threaten Jo and her family.
What follows is a story of paranoia, twists, double twists and the occasional curly wurly. It's hard to review this without giving too much away. But as always the female characters are pretty spot on as they always are in Ms Taylors books. I can't say this is my favourite of her books but the standard is pretty darned high! If you like a domestic drama with a good dose of surprises you will not be disappointed.
Thank you Netgalley, publisher and author for this digital edition for an honest review.
Whilst I enjoyed the book I found the end to be rushed and somewhat unbelievable - the rest I was with all the way! A twisty, turny, thriller a great read.
I absoloutly ate this book up. Started it yesterday evening and finished it this morning. It would not let go of me.
The book centres around Jo (slightly annoying but I really liked her as her charachter grew) her husband Max and their little girl Elise.
Jo who suffers from a plethora of issues ends up letting a stranger into her car. A stranger who knows too much about her and her family. After delivering a chilling warning to Jo she demands that Max give back what is hers. When Jo tells Max what happened he acts like she is over reacting (at this point my opinion of him being a complete ass was formed.....)
So what has Max been up to? Why did Jo's mother flee Ireland when Jo was just a child? Where did Jo's father go?
This book was a spectacular read. You are constantly trying to figure out who Paula is and is Jo actually a basket case?
The characters are wonderfully written. I found Jo annoying at the start but she grew and got stronger and I loved her by the end.
The style of writing was so easy to breeze through and very vivid.
I loved this book and happily I can say this was the first of C.L. Taylors books that I have read so I have the delight of reading the books that came before this one.
This is a terrific read from page one. I found it very intense and couldn't read it too late at night it as the plot stayed with me so much.
Jo and Max Blackmore have a 2 year old daughter Elise. Following a difficult time, Jo is struggling with mental health issues and suffers from agoraphobia. As Jo leaves work a woman called Paula engages her in conversation and then suggests Jo gives her a lift as they are both going to the same place. Jo is wary but feels bad for being suspicious so reluctantly agrees. Paula then acts very oddly and so the tension begins.
Max is an investigative journalist and has worked on cases exposing criminal behaviour so Jo is concerned he is putting their lives at risk due to reprisals from the people he’s exposed. Max is less convinced this is an issue and worries that Jo is making mountains out of molehills and that the real issue is her mental health is deteriorating again. There is tension and drama on almost every page to the point you want to get to the end as you need reassurance that all will be okay. Or will it?
Between the chapters from Jo and Max's viewpoints are chapters in italics from an anonymous voice. They are very chilling and are a great plot device to lead the reader further into wondering who is sane and who is evil. It's very well crafted - a great piece of writing.
I've not read this author before but would read her books again.
This is the second book I've read from C L Taylor and I enjoyed this one too
Max an Joanne Blackmore seem like they have it all good jobs, a lovely home and finally they are a proper family. Max is a journalist who loves to expose criminals. Jo suffers from. agoraphobia and anxiety issues but manages to function enough to care for her daughter Elise and work part time.
Jo is approached and threatened by the mysterious Paula and told to watch her daughter, this is the first in a string of things to happen, pushing Jo's anxiety through the roof. Max tries to support her but struggles to cope it starts to affects his work, his wife keeps phoning him and then his bosses private line.
This book gripped me right from the beginning and I throughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
