I'm sorry to say that this just didn't work for me.
When I requested it from Netgalley, there was no mention of it being originally published in 1965, but the suggestion this is a 2016 edition doesn't work for me either.
The language is extremely old fashioned and full of purple prose, with the occasional religious undertone.
The 1st person POV wavers between past and present tense, while drifting off into tangents about past events and recapping. Yet, we get no sense of who the characters actually are as people. They have no discernible personality.
There's quite a few formatting issues, including spelling/grammar errors, and missing spaces.
I have no explanation for the random boating analogy, but analogies and such appear often.
And...why is a policeman wearing Harris Tweed to a crime scene?
Overall, from what I read, it still reads like an old fashioned story. They've taken an old story but not billed it as historical. I mean, one of the golfers mentioned is 80+ this year! Without any timeline indication, it's jarring to start a book you believe to be somewhat contemporary only to find yourself trapped in an old episode of Heartbeat instead.
Sorry, but this isn't a book for me. Badly advertised on Netgalley, which did it no favours.
