When I requested, and was kindly granted by NetGalley, this biography of Joseph II, eldest son of Empress Maria Theresa and Francis I, I carelessly failed to notice that it was first published in 1897, and thus inevitably it has been superseded by later research. Nevertheless, given its age, it is a still readable account, although admittedly dry and formal in style, and it manages to give an interesting and perceptive general overview of the man, his life and his reign.
