I can’t believe I’m on book 3 already on my April catchup on this wonderful series.
This authors work is so underrated, if you fancy reading a really good series that’s fast paced and written well. Look no further.
This case is about hands being found in places. Nothing else, it’s not attached to a body.
Then fingers get posted to people in the mail.
Sound gruesome?
Yes, but it’s the how, why and wherefore that grabs you and doesn’t let you go in this wonderful series.
Jessica once again takes the lead, and from book 1 I have seen her get stronger in her role.
This was my first time reading any of Kerry Wilkinson's work and it did not disappointment. I am kind of sad that I picked it up in the middle of the series but I will definitely be picking up the first 2 books and rereading this one to put them all together.
I discovered Kerry Wilkinson through Netgalley and she is now one of my favorite authors ever! I have read all of her books and can't wait for more. This novel is no exception; it has everything you will want in a mystery suspense novel. The Jessica Daniel character grows more from novel to novel.~
Bookouture and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Woman in Black. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniel has been handed a new case, literally, by the perpetrator of a gristly crime. After leaving a man's severed hand in a public area, the criminal, only known by the black cloak that she wears, sends Daniel a finger as a taunt. When a second hand is found and a local politician's wife goes missing, Daniel's superiors push for answers before the police department gets completely roasted in the press. When a connection between the victims leads Jessica on a race against time to find the person responsible, will she and the rest of her team be able to stop the deadly revenge?
The Woman in Black is a continuation of the series featuring Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniel, although readers who are new to the books will be able to follow along with little issue. Jessica's private life does not dominate the book, but rather provides readers a little insight into Daniel's character. I like how the author allows the investigation to flow naturally, with the ever changing ebb and flow of a real life search for the truth. Despite the fact that the conclusion was as I predicted, the journey through the book was interesting and worthwhile. I would recommend The Woman in Black to those who enjoy police procedural suspense thrillers and I look forward to reading the next book in the series featuring Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniel.
In a time where strong UK female detectives are finding there feet in the book world DS Jess has no problems in that department. Each book adds another dimension to the characters and no story arc is the same.
First of all I would like to say thank you to netgalIery for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
I really enjoying this series.
I enjoyed this book I liked the characters the writing flowed well could put it down and pick it back up and get back into the story couldn't guess any of the book. can't wait to read the next book.
Within three pages I was hooked! I devoured this book and the rest of the series within a fortnight. Twists, turns, it was gripping and throughtfully put together. My new favourite author!
love this series keep them coming please. Thrilling from start to finish
This is the third book in the Jessica Daniel series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot is solid and I really enjoyed where the story went. The characters are great as normal and I did feel that in this book we got to know them even more and their relationships are developing as the books go though the series. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for books 1-6
I have enjoyed my Binge reading journey with these books thus far! and AHA! This series is back on track. Fingers in the mail? Now how creeptastic is that? Edge of the seat reading, and I am back on-board with this series. What a strong leading female. So good to see in books nowadays.
4.5 Stars
This book was a very pleasant surprise. I got caught by the title, and the summary was intriguing so i thought i could give it a try. And i really enjoyed.
When i read the first book of the series, i kind of was complaining that i figured it out very soon, Well with this book i definitely did not see it coming.
Once again, Detective Jessica Daniel is working on an unsual case. Somenone, a mysterious woman dressed in black, is going around the city leaving severed hands (missing one finger) behind and then sending by mail that finger to Detective Daniel. Nothing connects the victims, and whenever some kind of connection is found it turn out to be useless.
Meanwhile, everyone else was busy working on the case of the missing wife of the local MP. I actually enjoyed the extra confusion this case added to the story.
I really liked this book. Detective Daniel seemed to have grown up, in a way, since the first book, and se became more professional. Also the case was very intriguing and i liked how it turned out to be.
Honestly, i was not thinking of requesting another book of the series, but then after reading this book i am curious to see how she will evolve, and what other cases she would be working on.
I definitely recommend this book.
This series is well established across the pond but has just recently become available in the US with more books to be released this spring. I quickly became enamoured with Jessica Daniel and thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series.
At the start, Reynolds has been promoted and we are introduced to some new team members. A severed hand, missing the ring finger, has just been found in a local park. Then the finger is mailed to the police. Then another hand is found. The killer is taunting the police. And Jessica has minimal clues to go on. Unlike the tv police shows, Wilkinson is great about describing the mundane and often tedious work involved in solving a crime, especially when there is little to go on.
There's even some humor in this one. When Izzi tells Jessica the stories she's heard about her driving, I laughed out loud. Ditto for Jessica’s comments about her dislike of kids.
One thing I've noticed is that Wilkinson doesn't waste a lot of time rehashing prior books. Some series spend so much time bringing you up to speed, you feel like you're re-reading the prior book. No so here. You get glimpses, but they're more along the lines of a character remembering something from a prior case and vowing not to make the same mistake.
My thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. So happy to have books 4-7 to look forward to reading.
Was turned down for the other books in this series so I'm going to pass on this one rather than read them out of sequence. Thanks
I am totally addicted to this series - absolutely love Jessica, she is a wonderful character.
This book kept me intrigued right to the end!! Its truly brilliant Thank you Netgalley!!
Was not disappointed with this next installment of the Jessica Daniel's series. I have to say that with every book you see Jessica grow. And that truly amazing. I can not wait to read more of this character from is writer.
Third book in the Jessica Daniel Series. It can be read as a standalone, but obviously would be better read as part of the series to understand the back history and characters!
In this book Jessica is trying to track down who is leaving severed hands around Manchester City Centre. Who do they hands belong to and where are the rest of the bodies? All she knows is that they are being left by a mystery Woman in Black – what looks to be a woman in a long black robe with the face covered is being seen on CCTV depositing the hands in various places. There’s also changes in the station for Jessica after DI Cole and DS Reynolds are promoted and Jessica is made to share her office with the new DS Louise Cornish. Running alongside this case is also another big case of the local MP’s wife going missing. Being split into two teams with Jessica heading the Woman in Black case and Louise the missing wife case, the whole team are finding that they are getting nowhere. Are the two cases linked?
This was another great book. As in the previous two books, I love the character of Jessica. She’s still driving her battered old car, driving too fast and putting her foot into almost every conversation, but it feels like her character is growing with each book. She’s back in touch with her old friend Caroline, and she’s also getting close to her new DC, Izzy Diamond. There’s the usual banter between her and DC Rowlands which adds humour and light heartedness to the story. As usual the story starts off well and flows at a fast pace throughout the rest of the book. To be honest, I’ve struggled to put this one down, grabbing a few pages at every opportunity. I’m not sure if the actual plot of the story is the best so far as it feels like it’s been done so many times in other books but, as like the others, I’ve had my suspicions as to ‘whodunnit’ but been proved wrong, and not guessed it until it’s revealed right at the end!
I was a little disappointed that Adam didn’t make an appearance. I loved the chemistry between him and Jessica in book #2. You never know, we may see him in later books of the series!!
Would highly recommend this series, and I’m now off to start book #4!!
I just adore this woman's writing and get so excited whenever I see another book is released. Brilliant. I just couldn't put this down. There were so many thrilling twists in this book.Loved it. Love Jessica - she's a wonderful character. Great book and I cannot wait for the next in the series.
Kerry Wilkinson has created a fascinating character in Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniels and in this, the third in the series, she seems to be learning better to work in a team while retaining her ability to think outside of the box and combine instinct and deduction to solve some of the crimes that fall to her to investigate.
The story starts with a severed hand being left in a very public place in Manchester. A mother is reporting her son missing and then a package arrives at the police station, addressed to Senior Detective. The parcel reveals a finger removed from the hand - and DNA evidence shows that the hand and finger are not the missing young man.
Then a second hand and finger surface, and it is a DNA match for the missing son. Similar modus as last time, but this time it is addressed to Jessica, so it feels as if it's getting personal, and seems as if there might possibly be a serial killer at work - except there are only hands and fingers, but no further body parts. Careful scrutiny of security camera footage suggests the hands are being planted by a woman dressed in a hooded black cape and low heels. The search is on for connections between victims, and to discover what is going on.
I really love this series, I need all of it so I can marathon it, I don't know what I'm going to do when I've finished #4, I need 5-10 before I read #11, I want to know what happens!!
Request these books, read them, they're so good.
Off to read #4 now and try to make it last :(
