A good psychological thriller following Iris as she discovers her husband is not as perfect as she first though.
A good read, keeps you interested
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
The Marriage Lie was a fab, fab book that kept me hooked from the first few pages I could not put it down. A great page turner that I read in a day I loved it that much. Lots of twists and turns. My first book by this author but won't be my last.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, from the very start it captured my interest. In the opening chapter we meet Iris and Will at home, loving each other, discussing starting a family and rushing around as Will goes off to the airport to catch his flight while Iris goes off to the school where she works as a counsellor. Very quickly we realise that a plane has come down after taking off from Atlanta that morning. Iris has a sudden gut wrench but then feels less concerned on learning that the plane was headed for Seattle, and her husband's flight was to Orlando. Iris leaves several messages on Will's phone, contacts the hotel he should by now have checked in to and now starts to panic.
At this point I had all sorts of panicky emotions rising up to my throat as it brought back sickening memories of when I thought I'd lost my husband at sea. It's an all consuming panic where rational thought leaves you and you just need answers immediately. Disbelief and reality are misaligned, the outside world spinning in the opposite direction to your spiralling emotions.
From here, chapter 3, it becomes clear that Will was on the fated plane and Iris is thrown into a spiral of grief coupled with why he told her he was flying to Orlando when he was on the passenger manifest to Seattle, why the elaborate lies about the conference that didn't exist and just what was his connection to Seattle nearly 3,000 miles from where he said he was going?
Iris has a difficult time coping with her grief and with her husband's lies. What were his reasons, did he have another woman, another family, can she forgive him and what it's done to her memory of him? Where did he get the money to pay for the Cartier ring he gave her the night before his fated flight when they were financially broke?
The story is full of suspense right to the very end, it's gripping, tense and very well written and I would certainly read more by this author.
The marriage lie by Kimberley Belle is a mystery and thriller read.
When a plane crashes, Iris Griffiths watches the news unfold with horror…and then relief. Her beloved husband Will had just flown out from the same airport, but he was on a different flight. So why is his name on the list of victims? Surely there’s some mistake – her husband would never lie to her. Would he? But wading deeper into the truth of her husband’s deception, Iris begins to think the unthinkable. Maybe she’s glad that he’s dead…
This was a good read with good characters. Little slow in places but I managed to read it. 4*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.
This was a good gripping thriller which kept me wondering how things were going to pan out in the end.
The Marriage Lie proves that you never really know anything about anybody. Happily married until the day a plane goes down Iris has no idea that her husband Will is not the man she married. Set off on a rollercoaster ride to discover just why Will would lie to her, about everything, Iris has no idea that not only has she lost her husband she may well lose everything else too.
Iris waves her husband off as he leaves for a conference, so she's not worried when she hears about a plane crash en route to Seattle, but then she's told he was on board and doesn't believe it because he was going to Orlando. This story grabs you hook, line and sinker right from the start as we go with Iris on her emotional roller coaster as she tries to find out what Will was doing on the wrong plane. I for one couldn't put this down, didn't skim read either, trying to keep up with the fast moving events. Certainly one of the best books I've read in a while and I was delighted to see that this author has written other novels too as I love her writing style and descriptions of various places.
Will and Iris celebrate their 7th wedding anniversary. They are very much in love and devoted to each other. Will boards a flight to Seattle which unfortunately crashes when he as due to have been on another flight to Orlando. Iris, distraught refuses to believe that Will has been killed. Will has been leading a double life.
Gripping and a real rollercoaster. Things most certainly aren't what they seem! Would recommend. My thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for the advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
If something seems too good to be true then it probably is. That would have been my advice to protagonist Iris. She is heartbroken after she discovers that her perfect husband Will was on-board a plane to Seattle that has crashed with no survivors. He wasn't meant to be on that plane, he told Iris he was headed for Orlando, leading to confusion, denial and heartbreak for Iris. Bit by bit she begins to uncover her husband's lies, and soon discovers that he was not the man she thought he was.
The novel is narrated exclusively by Iris, after quickly picking herself up from the floor after her heartbreak she proves herself to be intelligent and steely. The characters in this are well created, multidimensional and realistic, although I did at times feel slightly frustrated with Iris when she was still in full heartbreak mode, despite the unveiling of her husband's deceit. The grief experienced by Iris is well written and the reader cannot help but empathise with her. The pace of the story moves along quickly, the chapters are baited perfectly ensuring that the reader needs to read on to find out what happens next. There are strategically placed red herrings to keep the reader guessing throughout.
The "Big Twist" I'm afraid I did guess from early on in the novel, I feel I have read so many of this type of genre in such a short space of time that I am becoming too good at working out the ending to early on. I was satisfied with the "climatic" ending though as it wraps up the story perfectly.
Overall rating 3.5 stars, this is a fast paced thriller full of grief, secrets and lies. Thanks to Kimberly Belle, Harlequin and NetGalley for my advanced reader copy.
A gripping thriller about what happens when tragedy strikes. Iris Griffiths is appalled when a plane from her local airport crashes - and her beloved husband has just flown out to go to Florida for a work conference. The plane in question was on its way to Seattle, so she is relieved that he must be fine, although concerned that she cannot make contact with him. It then transpires that his name was on the passenger list of both flights and that he is missing... What is going on?
This is a fascinating tale of deceit and deception, and there are so many secrets for Iris to uncover before she can discover the truth about her husband and her marriage. Iris is a sympathetic heroine and this is a well-written and cleverly crafted story which makes compelling reading.
