Description

Wendy Mac Ewan Kroger’s love for her younger brother led her on a frightening and difficult journey after he suffered a major stroke.

The episode plays out in My Brother’s Keeper: A Caregiver’s Story, from visits to hospitals and care facilities to sharing a home to dealing with a myriad of issues, none of which was easy. Over the course of several years, Wendy became her brother’s caregiver, advocate, drill sergeant, mother – whatever helped.

My Brother’s Keeper shares what she learned in hopes others who are inadvertent caregivers may benefit from the experience: Medical jargon, Medicaid, power of attorney, student loans, unraveling red tape, the IRS, credit unions, business owners, stellar professionals and unbelievable friends. She learned about herself and lost thirty pounds, but she also discovered a tenacity she didn’t know she had.

This is a tale that can help those who must care for others.

Wendy Mac Ewan Kroger’s love for her younger brother led her on a frightening and difficult journey after he suffered a major stroke.

This book is written by a devoted and loving sister about her brother who suffers a stroke and the subsequent journey they share in his rehabilitation. It gave me a real insight into the effects of a stroke and also an understanding into the difficulties the uninsured face in the USA. This very detailed book could have done with some editing - it was very long and a little repetitive, for example, the author did not need to explain that 'Bill' was her husband after mentioning him countless times previously. I also felt she was quite disloyal to her husband whose life was also turned upside down by the shift in focus of his wife's life. I hope this is seen as helpful criticism in order to improve the book for others. I was interested to look up Tracy's website - loved his paintings! I hope Tracy's independence continues to improve.

This story is both heart breaking and heart warming. It also includes so much valuable information for caretakers. I really wish I'd had this book while taking care of my Grandmother. It would have made a lot of things more clear and much easier. Kroger has done a very thorough job researching different issues and wading through the red tape, which I think helps to make this book not only invaluable but ESSENTIAL for a caregiver and their family. Also, her beautiful spirit, giving nature and unconditional love for her brother brightly shines from within the pages. I will be suggesting this book to everyone I know that is a caregiver or knows another person who is a caregiver.

This book is a must for all care givers. It shows how much one may have to fight the government to get results for loved ones. The author's writing was very straight forward and easy to understand. I recommend this book. Good book with information that would be very useful in these type of situations. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review. I wish the author well. You are a blessing
