Description
“Count Boruwlaski was a man of endearing qualities” – Durham Advertiser
Joseph Boruwlaski was born a dwarf. Conscious of his appearance and its subsequent effect, Boruwlaski starts his memoirs by talking about his early life. Always having stood out for seemingly looking like a child, he commits to paper his strong emotions and the key events that shaped his life.
Born in Chaliez, the capital of Polish Russia, he was one of three siblings who remained as dwarfs into the adulthood.
When Boruwlaski’s mother married Count de Tarnow, it was thought that she would no longer be able to adopt and care for Boruwlaski. This was when he met Countess Humiecka, a wealthy and highly esteemed lady from an ancient family in Poland. Their friendship led to Boruwlaski residing with her, under her care.
With Countess Humiecka, Boruwlaski travelled to Vienna, where he met the Queen of Hungary, Maria Theresa.
The Queen had heard of Boruwlaski and was unexpectedly pleased that he exceeded everything she’d heard of him. It is here that Boruwlaski was presented with a ring from the future Queen of France, wife of Louis XVI.
In his memoirs, Count Boruwlaski details his tours across Munich, Luneville, Poland, and Paris, amongst many other cities.
His journey from Germany to Poland was another life changing experience for Boruwlaski. It is in Poland, that Stanislaw II took Boruwlaski under his protection.
Here, he met and fell in love with Isalina Barbutan, the daughter of a Polish couple. Isalina, however, did not return his affections initially.
Against Countess Humiecka’s wishes and under the power of love, Boruwlaski continued to pursue Isalina. His hard work was rewarded when she eventually became his wife.
Count Boruwlaski goes on to detail his other tours, along with his wife, and then later, with his daughter.
His travels gave him the opportunity to meet some fascinating people and build his music career. However, his music wasn’t enough to keep up the expense of his tours.
Joseph Borulowski (1739–1837) was a polish born dwarf who travelled the courts of Europe. Towards the end of his years, Boruwlaski retired in Durham, England with his friend, Thomas Ebdon.
