In blood and fire and smoke, amid many individual and collective acts of bravery, the Western Allies came to Germany.

It is March 1945 and Nazi Germany is rapidly crumbling in defeat. 

In the east the Russian armies are already inside Germany, preparing for the great offensive that will take them across the River Oder to Berlin, forty miles away. 

In the German capital there is little panic, even though refugees from the east bring daily stories of massacre. 

Instead, there is a kind of numb acceptance of the inevitable, and here and there a faint gleam of hope that the Führer’s promise of new and devastating secret weapons would yet bring salvation to the dying Reich.

Allied forces have stormed across the Rhine and armoured spearheads are thrusting deep into the heart of the enemy territory.

Major Callum Douglas and his team receive an urgent summons from the American Special Forces HQ in Strasbourg. 

There they learn that something sinister is happening in a heavily defended area south of Stuttgart — something which could have terrible consequences for the Allies. 

The installations detected by air reconnaissance can only have one purpose: the Germans are building an atomic bomb.

Robert Jackson was born in 1941 in the North Yorkshire village of Melsonby. A former pilot and navigation instructor, his active involvement with aviation lasted many years. Following his retirement from the RAFVR in 1977 as a squadron leader, he became a full-time aviation writer and aerospace correspondent and lectured extensively on strategic issues. He speaks five languages, including Russian, and has written more than forty nonfiction works on military affairs. He is also the author of the popular Yeoman series.
