Mr. Walker, the cheerful Cockney rag and bone man, is always bumping into other people’s troubles.

From bricklayers to doctors, journalists to shop-girls, crooks to policemen, his lovable personality has made him a well-known figure all over London. 

After the murder of old Cartwright in the jeweller’s shop, Mr. Walker suddenly becomes involved in the case, helping out his good friend Detective Inspector Wedge with the missing details. 

Evidence leads to the arrest of a crooked police officer, and to the escape of Cartwright’s killer. 

But when another death occurs in the middle of the night – in Mr. Walker’s very own sitting room – the junkman finds his problems are only just beginning, as he himself is now a candidate for murder!

Soon the search widens all over England, with villains lurking within quiet suburban towns and the wild landscape of Dartmoor.
