I really enjoyed this historical romance. I liked the idea of a strong heroine, travelling on her own, wanting to live a life that is fulfilling. I enjoyed all of the minor characters that you meet throughout the story, with the exception of one. I know her character was important and if not for her actions, the story would have went quite a different way. I really liked how the hero was written. He had moments of bluntness in the story that were not only refreshing, but also brought a bit of humor. There was a realness to his character. This is one of the rare times that I can say I actually liked the hero more than the heroine, although she was a great character. It just took so long for the main characters to finally get together. Having them be separated absolutely makes the story what it is, but I did find myself thinking why couldn't Julianne just say 'to hell with it' and put herself first for a moment. But I respect that she struggled to balance living her life as she wanted and doing what she felt was proper because of how much she cared for her friends and family. I definitely look forward to reading more from this author and meeting some of these characters again.

It is 1816 and independent Julianne Smith has gone to visit her friend in Manchester from London. The coach is stopped and robbed. She is without funds so Capt Charles Dorchester stops with hs men to help and after a night together at his brother's estate she goes on her way to her friend's. She does not tell anyone about the robbery or meeting the captain. Julianne has things she wants to do in her life which does not include marriage. Charles's brother dies in Indian and he becomes the Viscount and they meet again while Julianne is with her friend she lives with in London. She does not want to explain how they met so she acts like they don't know each other. Catie, hr friend has decided she loves Charles and when he comes to see Julianne, Catie thinks he is there to see her. As time goes by their relationship is just not to be as it does not fit with the future Julianne has set for herself and she does not want to hurt Catie. Can this all be straightened out? It was a read I could not put down as I wanted to see what was going to happen next right up to the end.
