Did you know that the Egyptian mummy-making process took 70 days? Or that 15 of those days were needed to wrap the mummy?

I’ve been an Egypt nerd for most of my life. I learned so many new facts while reading this book and it’s ignited the need to learn more. I would have done some serious drooling over this book as a kid. My Nan and I shared our fascination of Ancient Egyptian culture, beliefs and customs, and for a time I was sure I was going to be an archaeologist when I grew up.

I read books and more books about Egypt. When we got to choose our own topic for a project in primary school I chose Ancient Egypt. That project is still sitting in a box in the garage, pulled out and leafed through from time to time when nostalgia finds me. I had a silver necklace I wore throughout high school with a Nefertiti bust charm on it. I laboured for months over a detailed Tutankhamun burial mask cross stitch for my Nan and although she was an incredible artist, she removed one of her paintings from the living room wall and hung my framed present in its place. My Nan was totally awesome!

I loved that this book takes you on a journey through the mummification process that is appropriate for children (it’s recommended for ages 8 and above), but it is also interesting enough to hold an adult’s attention. Just some of the snippets of information I enjoyed coming across while reading include:
* What images were on the inside of coffins and why
* Who the first Egyptian mummy was
* Where we get the English word mummy from
* What determines whether you read hieroglyphs from left to right or right to left
* What different colours symbolised in Egyptian culture.

While there were plenty of photos and illustrations interspersed with the text, the layout didn’t feel cluttered. The copy I read was digital so I haven’t seen the final die-cut model but from the photos throughout the book I can imagine it would help bring what you’re reading about to life. I’m also quite proud to be able to tell you that I now know how to write my first name in hieroglyphs thanks to this book.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley (thank you so much to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - becker&mayer! kids for the opportunity) in exchange for honest feedback.

Good choice to entertain children in elementary to middle school age. The illustrations are delightful and the descriptions. I would be an excellent book for libraries if the references were included in the book.

This book breaks down the entire process so that kids ages 5-12 can gain an understanding of the way the Ancient Egyptian burial rites were practiced for thousands of years.

I have a son who is as interested in Egyptian history as I am, and this book was something that he absolutely loved! He was enthralled with the photos, and the information snippets that are provided along the way. He kept saying, "check this out, check this out!"

I completely recommend this book for those with younger kids. This is perfect for a immersion into a different time, without completely scaring kids off. The facts are not overwhelming, and you can gain a sense of direction with the easy step by step process used within the book. Colored pages help to drive home the points that the author is wanting to get across, and the fun facts keep kids entirely engaged.

Dig deep to find the truth of the ancient Egyptians!

Through pictures, beautiful illustrations and, in the case of the hardcopy, through a diecast model embedded in the pages, Inside Out: Egyptian Mummy explores one of the most well-known relic types of ancient Egypt. Layer by layer, the parts of a mummy and its inner and outer coffins are laid bare. This particular mummy is of a high priest, Hornedjitaf. Paired with each segment are tons of interesting tidbits of info about materials used and why, Egyptian spirituality, linguistics, and grave gods, among other things.

My cubs and I really enjoyed reading this book. The archaeologist in me adored it! The language is meant for older readers, but the younger ones enjoyed the pictures, and all of them had lots of questions, prompting learning discussions. Overall, a fascinating look at one very special relc of the past, and the perfect book for any kid interested in ancient Egypt, or archaeology in general.

***Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

With beautiful illustrations and interesting subject matter, this book is a win-win with curious children. and although it is quite short, it fills a child with wonder and lets them take in what they want before progressing to more challenging reading material. With appropriate technical language used, this book would be good in a school library and would work well for project work as well as curious individuals.
I am reviewing this book for Luann Columbo, Quarto Publishing, and NetGalley who gave me a copy of their book for an honest review.
