I enjoyed this book. A good introduction to colour therapy, nicely laid out.

Secrets of Color Healing offers curious insight into the primary and secondary colors, their history and ancient use, the role of colors in astrology, and most importantly – detailed information on how to use them for therapeutic benefits for the overall well-being of our body and mind.

It’s an interesting beginners’ guide to different color-related practices and techniques. You could read it as an informative tool or for the purposes of expanding what you already know about complementary therapies or simply to satiate your curiosity and for entertainment. It’s entirely up to you to decide what you want to take away from the book and material, depending on your level of comfort zone and personal beliefs.

A highly visual and rich on images and colors book, you’ll find every chapter well-supported by a range of graphics. It’s not heavy on writing and it doesn’t require prerequisite knowledge or previous experience with color therapies. If you enjoy following a keen interest on alternative concepts, you’ll find this book right up your alley!

I have kindly received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Ivy Press in exchange of a fair review.

I briefly read about colour therapy in magazines so I was interested to know about the subject. I found this to be one of the best introductions guides I have read, it clear with bite sized chunks so I could read the advise and work on it before going onto the next. I had hours of interesting and pleasurable reading, recommended in the discovery of using colour to heal.

Secrets of Colour Healing by Stephanie Norris, looks at the use of colour as a healing tool, from a metaphysical and psychological perspective. There is a great deal of practical scientific information about what 'colour’ is, and how it is created, in terms of light and dyes. The history of using colour for healing is explored, from Avicenna to Babbitt, Gembal, and Steiner. Various colours and their associations are explored, with useful suggestions on how to utilise colour therapy in your own life.

I loved the history and science explorations. Our language reflects our associations with colour, and that is suggestive of how those colours can be used. It should be noted that these associations are Western-centric. I do wish other cultures had been explored in depth, as many cultures have very different associations and uses. There are tidbits here and there related to other cultures. One in particular that stuck with me was a Native American association regarding turquoise.

As someone who loves to play with colours, I'm definitely aware of how colour can affect mood, and a whole host of physiological changes that come with mood. I would have liked to see a stress on personal associations as well. These are just as important as cultural ones. For instance- pinks do not soothe me. Putting me in a pastel pink room is going to piss me off.

The mentions of Atlantis and Atlanteans rubbed my the wrong way. The notions of a civilisation possessing mystic powers and advanced tech is akin to me as suggesting aliens built the pyramids. No son. Aliens did not build the pyramids, and there was not a land sunk beneath the waves that possessed greater technology than we do today.

All being said, this was still a great introduction to colour therapy, with the emphasis on history and sc
