I received a free copy of Kitchen Ideas You Can Use, Updated Edition by Chris Peterson in exchange for an honest review. This book contains photographs of different styles of kitchens. It discusses how different aspects of color, texture, and appliances can be used to achieve the visual desired effect. Though there are some portions of the book that discuss functionality, a lot of the ideas and images contained in the book seem to solely focus on visual appeal.

Great collection of kitchen ideas. Lovely pictures and great, limited, content describing the styles and materials. Overall, a nice inspiring read for anyone rehabbing a home.

If you are thinking of remodeling or creating a new kitchen, you're likely hungry for inspirations. Instead of visiting every Home Depot, IKEA, or Kitchen store and collecting a bunch of brochures, you can peruse the latest designs all in one place, with an index at the back telling you from where the image was obtained. Because it is nearly all from manufacturers (and a few Shutterstock), you're looking at beautiful kitchen after beautiful kitchen - there's nothing blase here. But it also means that you are looking at the most expensive finishings in optimal settings (size, lighting, etc.). So you will have to do some imagination still on figuring how these could work in your personal home.

The book is broken down as follows to help you narrow down images by your own personal needs: Style by size (cozy kitchens, family friendly spaces, large and luxurious), Scintillating kitchen styles (contemporary, traditional, modern, country/farmhouse/cottage), Color in the kitchen, Spectacular surfaces (countertops and backsplashes, floors), Stylish kitchen storage (classy cabinets, specialty cabinet storage, handsome racks and shelves), Breathtaking appliances (striking refrigerators, dishwashers, compactors, ovens, cooktops, ranges, wine refrigerators, vent hoods), Beautiful fixtures (faucets and sinks), Incredible islands, Lighting the kitchen design, and extras/accents.

Each section has a title at the top of each page with circles telling you how many pages are dedicated to the topic. The book is mostly showroom photographs with small descriptions telling you what's unique/distinct/desireable in the photograph. The presentation is clean and friendly and easy to navigate with special sections on e.g., eco friendly kitchen designs or the latest in color refrigerators. The book makes it quite easy to figure out what you would like based on several styles.

If you are an indecisive person or someone who needs a professional to put it all together for you, you'll likely find this book frustrating or not very useful. As well, so many items in the book are extremely costly once you actually find them (e.g., recycled glass countertop). But as a thorough primer on today's kitchens, it is an invaluable resource and idea guide. It can also help you understand what you want in a kitchen so you can bring that idea to a home store. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

As I m in the process of refurbishing my kitchen in the house we have just moved into, this book was extremely helpful. It was up to date and beautifully illustrated. Many of the layout did have a island bench, so it is a little limiting if you do not have that layout in mind. I do so it suited me, and at the end of the book there was a chapter with some pretty wild colours and finishes and well as a section on appliances.
I found this book extremely helpful and imaginative.

Another one I picked up because I’m planning for a few renovations in my house and just needed some ideas I could springboard from. Similar to ‘Bathroom Ideas You Can Use’, this one had a lot of information on how to maximize your space, regardless of how large it is, and how to best use colors, textiles, and appliances to make the space what you’re looking for. I also really appreciated the section that discussed the best way to clean your stove, as this has always been an issue for me.

A great resource for anyone that is looking for some ideas on remodeling their kitchen. Whether it be a small reno or a full reno, there’s definitely going to be something in here to make it work picking up.

Nonfiction
Adult
Only four years after the first edition, author Chris Peterson has released an updated edition to his stylish kitchen design guide, reflecting the quick pace of change in both technology and trends. From bold lighting options and copper fixtures to eco-friendly countertops made of recycled glass, paper, and other materials, this new edition offers a photo-packed and comprehensive overview of what to consider in your kitchen design. It’s just under 200 pages, and most facing page spreads feature four to six photos along with helpful explanations and tips to guide you in making the best choice for your home design, family life, style preference, and budget. This isn’t a do-it-yourself installation guide, but rather a collection of up-to-date ideas on design and elements. After a brief review of styles from contemporary to cottage, the book is divided into seven sections: Color in the Kitchen, Spectacular Surfaces (counters, walls, and floors), Stylish Kitchen Storage (includes racks as well as cabinetry), Breathtaking Appliances, Beautiful Fixtures (sinks, faucets, and of course the latest trend of pot-fillers), Incredible Islands, and Lighting the Kitchen Design, which includes windows and skylights as well as electrical fixtures. The guide ends with a final two-page spread called Awesome Extras – essentially a reminder to include colour and style with useful elements like colourful drawer pulls, eye-catching clocks or elegant wine racks. Half of the spread is devoted to demonstrating a compost pail built into the counter – a nifty idea, for sure, but oh, this section could have been so much more! Whether you are daydreaming of a sleek and modern kitchen, or planning a pending renovation, this book will prove very useful early in the process. Peterson takes a practical approach most of us will appreciate – when you are choosing a sink, look for one with a drain positioned toward the back; that maximizes the cupboard space beneath. In the section on surfaces, one info-box offers tips on care and cleaning of various materials to keep them looking good for years. If your tastes run to polished concrete countertops, for instance, be prepared to put some work into their care, or you can go funky and just let the wear and stain of daily life add visual interest. The ideas are useful for renovating your new condo, designing a new-build, or slowly updating your kitchen to reflect your lifestyle. My sincere thanks to publisher Cool Springs Press for the digital reading copy provided in exchange for my honest review.

This is a lovely book to look at even if you aren't planning on rennovating your kitchen. The pictures are beautiful and give lots of ideas. It works whatever size of your kitchen, although there is an emphasis on kitchens with an island.

I found the information on colour particularly useful and my Husband enjoyed the information on kitchen tech.

The book is American so more useful for ideas rather than sourcing products.
