Holly has been given her dream job but her work bestie, Roz, seems to be faking her happiness. Once things start to take a turn at work it would seem that Roz isn’t that happy at all but no one believes Holly about the mysterious things that keep happening. Throw in Holly’s new lodger and the fun holly has with her best friend, Dee, things could get messy! As always Jane’s books are a fabulous read with laugh out loud moments and lines you read and identify with completely.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
The type of book to read in one sitting!
I’ve read all of Jane Fallon’s previous novels and really enjoy how and what she writes - the trials and tribulations of women, involving their families, partners, friends and work life. Her latest book was just as enjoyable, with a few twists and turns to keep the story moving and the reader guessing.
Would highly recommend.
I read this in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down. Holly got the job, her work best friend Roz is delighted for her, so it must be Juliet who is causing ll the upset, after all, she never got the job, so shes definitely jealous. Or is she???? Some brilliant twists and turns, in this story of ‘friendship’.
I love Jane Fallon books and have done since I read her first book many years ago! So I was very happy to get this one as a review copy so thank you Jane and Net Galley.
This one is particularly good as it focuses on rivalry at work and what people are prepared to do to get ahead even if it means ruining lives through lies, deceipt, breaking trust and friendships. Lots of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The character develpment means you feel involved in their lives and want to know their story and reasons for their behaviour. Raced through it in a couple of days. It keeps you reading as you want to know how it going to pan out. Brilliantly written and thought out.
It's a must read in my opinion.
A book full of lively characters that is difficult to put down. Jane Fallon has taken office politics to another level with this highly entertaining story about Holly, newly promoted into a managerial position, and the mystery colleague who is trying to sabotage her career. Holly thinks she know who the culprit is but does she? It takes a lot of twists and turns with some dark moments and the help of her friends, Dee and Gavin, before Holly discovers the truth. The trouble is, will her boss believe her? As we live though Holly's nightmare., we get to know her daughter, her lodger and her two closest friends as well as the office crew. I was keeping this for a holiday read but opened it and just had to romp on through. Jane Fallon, through her characters, makes such witty observations on life and can tell a great story.
Tell Me a Secret
Great “switch off” read centred around the office and it’s politics. Holly gets a promotion but someone is keen for her not to get through her probation period. I love the way JF develops her characters and the way she makes you feel you are living in the life of the characters as a fly on the wall listening in to all the juicy gossip. Loved it. Highly recommended.
I have loved the last two by Jane Fallon so I was really pleased to be invited to read this . I loved it and read it in a day . We meet Holly who has just been given a promotion at work , and the rest of the office . Someone is not pleased and start sabotaging Holly's new position from early on , sending inapropriate emails to her boss , and the actors from the soap opera where they work . Holly has her suspicions but is she right ? With her good friend Dee she starts to investigate and lets just say the surprises and twists keep coming . I agree with the other reviewers it was a refreshing change to have a story about a strong , independent woman without a love interest .
This was a great read and 5 stars from me .. Thank you for the chance to read it .
Having read all of Jane Fallon’s previous books I was looking forward to reading Tell Me a Secret and it doesn’t disappoint.
Holly has just been promoted to her dream job but it appears that not everyone is happy for her. As mistakes begin to appear in Holly’s work - mistakes she knows she hasn’t made - she begins to wonder, what is going on? When inappropriate emails are sent out in her name, she needs to find out who is behind them as it seems someone is out to destroy her reputation.
An entertaining book with plenty of twists and turns, featuring a good central character which made for an enjoyable and easy read.
Hidden manipulation and poisonous friends - the perfect ingredients for the latest Jane Fallon novel. Her writing style is gripping and expertly weaves together a back story, current events and manipulations to constantly have you second guessing who the real problem is. Office politics reach a new level with this entertaining story about Holly who has just been newly promoted into a managerial position - but not everyone is happy for her. The characters are likeable throughout, Holly, her close friend, daughter, colleagues - and Fallon brings to real life the politics surrounding the workplace that can often turn people against each other.
Fabulous!! Have read all of Jane Fallon's previous novels, so was thrilled to be able to preview and review her latest. I couldn't put it down.....it was one of those books you didn't want to end. Life in the office of a TV series is never dull...but hits new heights when Holly is promoted and then targeted by someone close to her. Lots of twists and turns as Holly tackles awkward moments and tries to flush out her adversary.
Jane Fallon's characters are well drawn and they entice you in to their lives. A brilliant novel. Would highly recommend.
I absolutely loved this book. A nice, light read that has you rooting for the main character. Jane Fallon can do no wrong!
Tell Me a Secret is another excellent engrossing story from Jane Fallon.
Holly is a script writer for a soap opera, she is promoted at work above another office member and suddenly everything starts going wrong. Scripts go missing, appointments disappear from her diary, and emails are sent from her computer to senior members of staff and some of the actors that are offensive and rude.
With the help of her friend Dee they start investigating, it’s pretty easy to identify the culprit, but not so easy to prove it.
The lengths that unfold to show the sheer evilness of the person are shocking and I did find myself becoming pretty angry. But, this story unfolds nicely with a cast of characters that add much depth and often humour.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and not wanting to give away spoilers will end this review!
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
Holly and Roz spend most of their days together. They like the same jokes, loathe the same people and tell each other everything.
So, when single mum Holly gets a shot at her dream job after putting everything on hold to raise her daughter, she assumes her friend will be dying to pop the champagne with her. But is she just imagining things, or is Roz not quite as happy for her as she should be?
As Holly starts to take a closer look at Roz's life outside their friendship, she begins to discover a few things that don't add up. Who is the woman who claims to be her ally? Perhaps it was a mistake to tell Roz all her secrets.
Because it takes two to forge a friendship.
But it only takes one to wage a war . . .
I think I suspected everybody at some point of involvement in the campaign against Holly, from her best friend Dee to series producer Glen all the twists and turns took a while to be revealed. Who’s out to get Holly, and equally to the point, what can she do about it?
I liked that there was no romance element, it's refreshing to find a book in this genre that has a bit more to it than 'girl meets boy' and intrigued you with a good and interesting storyline that kept you turning the pages from start to finish!
Another stunning read. Jane Fallon has completely outdone herself with this latest novel; it is utterly superb! 5 well deserved stars
Many thanks to NetGalley, Jane Fallon and Penguin Michael Joseph for an advance copy in return for a fair and honest review.
Wow, what a great book. Jane Fallon is back with a bang. I’ve always loved Fallon’s style of writing but I didn’t enjoy her last book as much as others. However, this book is amazing and she is back to her best.
The book will pull you in from page 1 and the characters are all very identifiable throughout. There’s enough twists and turns to keep you guessing.
I’d strongly recommend this book and it’s worthy of a big fat 5 stars.
A great book with the action from page one till the last one, there are twists a plenty and some very realistic characters and a couple that should be unbelievable but you probably think you know someone like that only you think they are a one off. If that doesn't make sense and I'm thinking it may not once your into this book you will understand and then be so hooked you won't care but you will care about Holly the lead character.
Holly has just been promoted but on probation before it's confirmed but not all her friends are as chuffed as she thought and not all colleagues are who she thinks they are. So the stuff that all good thrillers have but this one starts with action and the plot keeps going and has some really good personal touches that bring a feel of reality that takes you into the story or i thought took me deeper so that i felt a part of the thriller as if i was there. There is a sub plot invoking Holly's daughter Ashley, you get to meet her friend Dee and her husband Gavin, plus a lodger who works at a private dental practice mind aren't most private now!
The plot is about a subtle that becomes very unsubtle attack that puts Holly's job on the line before she even gets to sign on the dotted line or could very well do so and it's about to get dirtier by the day and she doesn't know who she can trust bit like life at times I guess but not like this i hope for your sake. You have to follow Holly's journey her mistakes and genuiness.
I loved this book and hope you do as well i definitely recommend it and want to thank Michael Joseph and NetGalley for my copy of this fantastic thriller I hope you enjoy it as much or more than i did.
Deliciously compulsive this really is a total pleasure of a read that I just flew through. Gossip, lies, friendships that may not be quite what they seem and devious behaviour is at the heart of this mystery and it makes for a brilliant novel and it’s so well written that you really do feel a part of all the machinations that are going on. My first book by the fabulous Jane Fallon and it won't be the last the excellent characterisation made it a novel I thoroughly enjoyed and well recommend.
My thanks to NetGalley and Penguin UK for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Wow, this was brilliant. It was so different to last year’s book (or rather this year January 2018), and unlike her other books which are usually about a woman getting revenge or a woman scorned.
This didn’t have any romance in it and concentrated on friendships instead and how you should keep your friends close but your enemies closer. The story was really well developed and written. It even had you doubting everyone, who could you trust?!
I’ve read some good books this year but every now and again one comes along and reminds you how brilliant a book can be, and this one did that for me. It was just a higher class of writing, and I couldn’t stop turning the pages wanting more. I even found myself thinking about the book when I wasn’t reading, and then you truly know the book has gotten its grip and won’t let you go until you’ve finished it!
I had been a little worried as when I read the last book I was somewhat underwhelmed as I felt the story was a bit repetitive and obvious. I'd still enjoyed it, but I was expecting something of the same from this one. However, Fallon has completely outdone herself with this latest novel; it is utterly superb!
I can't believe I have to potentially wait over a year now for her next book!
I really enjoyed this book and found it difficult to put it down. The storyline was good - very original. The characters were believable and I could identify with what the main character was going through, although thankfully not from personal experience! Well recommended. Would be a good holiday read.
This is the draft of the review that I plan to post on Amazon.co.UK when released:
Brilliantly, acerbically, funny. "One more page" turned into reading the whole book in a single sitting. Who needs sleep.
I really enjoyed this book, found more believable as I had a colleague who was a compulsive liar and made up a whole life!! I loved Holly and how she decided to fight back with the help of her friends who were very amusing
What a book!! I absolutely loved it. I connected immediately with Holly and adored See. The story was amazing, I literally could not put it down. It had my heart racing a few times and although I guessed the twist it still had me doubting myself. It's the kind of book I'd definitely read again, and I'd 100% recommend it
Another gem from Jane Fallon, this book is a delight to read. It tells the story of single mother, Holly, who has to deal with something awful going on in her workplace - who is responsible? Who can she trust? Well written, easy to read, intriguing, it will resonate with readers regarding their own work situation to a greater or lesser degree in lots of cases. Just the right kind of easy-Reading bookmfor this time of year.
You can always rely on Jane Fallon for an addictive read – wanting to get through it all in one sitting!
The friendship between work colleagues Holly and Roz starts to go awry when Holly gets the top job. The trouble is, Roz knows everything about Holly, and someone is out to cause trouble for Holly.
A great read with plenty of laughs, and I’d highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
My thanks to Penguin UK, Jane Fallon and NetGalley for the opportunity to read TELL ME A SECRET. Another stonking book from Jane Fallon putting readers in the 'what would I do?' frame of thought. Office politics have always been difficult to navigate, but when Holly discovers closest work friend, Roz isn't who she thought she was, she begins to question their friendship. Roz seems to have it all, a wonderful life, a husband who adores her, and a brilliant social life, and Holly and Roz tell each other everything, don't they?. So when things begin to go awry when Holly is promoted, she blames Julia, the girl who would be Queen of the office, and there's nothing worse than when you think someone is out to ruin things for you. Throw in the new lodger and things begin to get very interesting for Holly with lots of twists and turns, and surely nots. This is the perfect 'frenemy' novel, and let's face it, we've all got them!
Holly has always prioritised her little family so when, after years, she gets her dream job on a popular TV soap she's over the moon, and also determined to pass the probation period, to prove that she's really the right person in the right place. But quickly it turns out that not everyone in the office agree with her promotion, as a not a very subtle campaign full of sabotage and accidents takes place. Holly is in shock and taken aback - who is behind this all? She tries to unveil who the person is, but in the meantime she must be prepared for a life full of twists and turns, sometimes better than in the soap opera she's working on.
The characters were absolutely brilliant. Not only Holly, but also the side characters that were so well developed and fleshed out. Jane Fallon is perfect when it comes to capturing people's characters, their personalities and mentalities, and she's a real queen of revenge novels, guys. The characters always feel realistic, they are engaging and genuine, and the way she writes about friendship dynamics is absolutely brilliant, as she isn't shy of stirring things up and complicating them. She's a great and sharp observer of everyday interactions and she can brilliantly transfer them onto the pages of her novels. Holly was so human, with all her insecurities, and the need to prove herself that she's got the promotion rightly and so she puts herself under a lot of pressure. I can only guess how weird and difficult it must have been for her, suddenly managing people that she used to work with and who are now to report to her but I think she really did her best, even though it couldn't have been an easy task, especially with all the back - stabbing and the uncertainty of what's going to happen yet. I really loved to see her growing in confidence, it was the best thing to see. It was also refreshing to see Holly as a single woman, not looking after a romance or a man that she could relay on - she didn't need it, she had her best friend Dee, and I loved their interactions and how far would Dee go to help Holly.
But I also think we shouldn't demonize the other character, the one that sabotaged Holly. Of course our sympathy is on Holly's side, there is no other option, but I think we should also stop for a moment and think what was it that made her act like this, to put people so down. And this also what I so love in Jane Fallon's novels, the diversity, the way she is able to portray different types of friendship! There is the perfect mix of characters that we love and we love to hate.
This book follows the Jane Fallon's proven formula and guys, it turns out I could read the books like that over and over again, it doesn't grow old or boring for me. Though, in my opinion, this novel is not as bitchy and as sharp as the previous books. It's not a criticism, oh no, it's just my simple opinion, I am used to much more trouble, fret and paperchase. Also, in the previous books we were not directly told who is the frenemy and here we actually know from the very beginning who's sabotaging Holly, the question is now - why. But - just as with Ms Fallon's previous books I was so close to put this book down because I simply couldn't take the tension! This is why I don't watch films - because I can't stand sitting here and not being able to do anything, and it is the same with "Tell Me a Secret". You've no idea how much I wanted to punish the character in question, and I'm usually really a very peaceful person, so that's saying something, that my blood was boiling and I so wanted her to happen to slip up eventually. Sure, there were things that were perhaps happening too convenient, and right people in the right places so that the plot could flow seamlessly towards the happy end, but honestly, it didn't bother me.
I do love a Jane Fallon novel, that's not a secret, and "Tell Me a Secret" was a light - hearted, entertaining novel, full of intrigue and hidden depth. There is the safe and proved Fallon's trademark that explores the themes of friendship, rivalry, betrayal, jealousy and deception, and it's sometimes so refreshing to read a book without a romance in it. It explores toxic friendships in such an eye - opening way, with all its ups and downs. It was, just like all the other Fallon's books, a fast - paced and addictive read that made my heart go faster and me to clench my fists. It was a complex, thought - provoking and clever read, very well developed and written in this brilliant, sharp writing style. Even though it's pretty sure who the "bad one" is, there are moments that I started to doubt myself, and started to suspect everybody, that I was wondering perhaps they are all involved? The author knows how to complicate the things, how to pool wool over our eyes. Highly recommended!
When Holly lands a great promotion at work, someone seems to be less than happy that she got the job. The book deals with professional rivalry, friendships and jealousy in equal measures. When her future is put in doubt during her probation there seems to be an obvious suspect, but as events unfurl you begin to wonder whether any number of her friends or colleagues could be behind the activities.
She's a single mum with a grown up daughter and after getting an empty nest she is looking for a lodger to help her carry on supporting her daughter. The selection process was quite funny, where she called on her best friend for support.
I loved the twists in the book and couldn't wait to see what might happen next to poor Holly. I love picking up a new Jane Fallon book and this one was a pure delight to read.
A real page turner about friends and office politics and workplace rivalries. I couldn't put it down and was greatly impressed by the writing. I loved the characters Holly and Roz. It really was a very entertaining and a compulsive read. I definitely would recommend it.
I have enjoyed all of Jane Fallon’s previous novels but #TellMeASecret surpassed my expectations. Set in the office of a popular tv drama, this book examines the nature of friendships and office politics and keeps the reader guessing as to the identity of the “frenemy”. The story is engaging and entertaining, the characters well rounded and the writing excellent. Some advance reader copies contain formatting issues and typographical errors but not this one. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes an escapist read with a strong well plotted storyline.
I’d like to thank @JaneFallon, the publishers and #Netgalley for allowing me to read this advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
